Bradford White Water Heater Sacrificial Anode Replacement Guide The best way to keep your Bradford White natural gas or electric water heater working well for 15 to 20 years is to regularly inspect and change the "sacrificial" magnesium (or aluminum & zinc) anode rod. The rod helps prevent the interior of the tank from rusting and developing a leak. This should be done at least every 5 to 7 years.
