The Waipio
Valley Lookout is a scenic attraction located on the northeastern
Hamakua Coast of the Big Island of
Hawaii near Honokaa town and
about 60 miles away from Kailua-Kona. We visited the Waipio Lookout just to enjoy the view, but some brave people drive down to the bottom of the valley with 4X4 vehicles or hike down the very steep 25% grade path on foot. If you don't have a 4X4 vehicle or would rather not hoof it yourself, there are wagon and ATV tours that shuttle visitors to the floor of the "Valley of the Kings" as it was once known. Those that do make the 1 mile (30-45 minutes) hiking trip down to the bottom of Waipio Valley will be treated with several waterfalls, a mostly deserted black sand beach, fertile taro fields, rivers, and 2000 feet high green cliff sides. |
