After
hours of online research for our first Hawaiian vacation, we decided
to visit the Kona side of the Big Island of Hawaii and selected the
"Charming Studio" at the Kona Comfort Vacation Rental house as our
temporary home.
We were attracted to the Kona Comfort Vacation Rental due to its convenient location on the middle of the Kona coast close to many of the best snorkeling beaches and other attractions. Other features that we liked about Kona Comfort included the quiet suburban location, a very comfortable queen size bed, a full sized refrigerator, WiFi wireless internet, satellite TV, a free bag of Kona Comfort coffee in the freezer, the beautiful backyard, the friendly neighbor that gave us tons of bananas, and the variety of colorful birds that frequented the property. The Charming Studio was very reasonably priced at just $55 per night. We got a 5% discount for staying 9 nights so our total was just $583.64 with a $50 damage deposit that was refunded shortly after we left. |

At first I was a
bit worried about the fact that our studio at Kona Comfort was not equipped
with air conditioning since we were visiting in June. But we quickly learned
that the home's location on the southern slope of Hualālai volcano ensured a
consistently pleasant climate with temperatures in the low to mid 70's
during the day and low to mid 60's at night. It was also easy to regulate the temperature in the studio by opening or closing the windows by the bed, the window in the bathroom, and the sliding glass door (with screen door). For the few times we felt a bit warm after coming back from the beach, we just turned on the ceiling fan over the bed and the small fan on top of the refrigerator. |

Some of the other thoughtful little items in the studio that we appreciated were the local travel books, a small collection of DVDs, the packets of microwave popcorn, note paper pads, a cup of pens, napkins, spices, cocktail glasses, a coffee grinder, an alarm clock, plenty of hand and face towels, more than enough toilet paper, hand soap, dish soap, a water pitcher, a cutting board, plenty of eating utensils, a blender with a pour spout, and a white noise machine (small white oval device on top of fridge). There was also a standard sized propane powered barbeque grill just a few steps away from the studio.

Yet another reason
that we were glad to have chosen this vacation rental was being able to park
our little Hyundai Accent rental car just a few steps away from the entrance
to the studio. That definitely saved us a lot of time over the 10 days / 9
nights when we were repeatedly moving groceries, snorkel gear, luggage, and
ourselves to and from the car. We would have surely lost several precious hours of our vacation in Hawaii if we had stayed in a regular condo building or a hotel. Especially if the building or hotel required guests to use the valet service as has been our experience at a few places in the past. |

There were occasionally clouds over the area (see the first picture on this page) since the Kona Comfort house is a few miles up the side of a volcano, but we always found sunshine waiting for us down near the Kailua-Kona coast. The cloud cover was beneficial since it helped keep the house cooler and was a welcome relief during our quick stops at the studio in between snorkeling trips.

I'd recommend that anyone visiting the Big Island of Hawaii should rent a car if possible. We got our car through HotWire.com from Alamo at a price of just $20 per day or a total of $176 for the 9 days. The island covers over 4,000 square miles and there are so many great attractions, beaches to visit, and recreational opportunities.

Bananas From Neighbor |
Grilled Chicken & Salad |
One of the
neighbors saw us walking around the back yard admiring the flowers and was
nice enough to bring over a basket full of ripe bananas not once but twice
during our stay. Both times, I ate several right away, saved some for the
next morning, and blended the rest into a tasty banana smoothie to slowly
enjoy the next few days.
The first dinner we had in the studio is pictured above. I grilled some chicken breasts that we bought at the nearby Safeway supermarket and chopped up a quick salad. We like eating out at restaurants just like most people, but it's also nice to just cook something quickly at "home" after a long day of snorkeling, driving around the island, and being out in the sun. |

Colorful Hawaiian Bird |
Yellow & Orange Finch |
Even though there
were a wide variety of colorful birds that we frequently saw on the Kona
Comfort property, I was only able to get some half way decent shots of these
yellow and orange finches. (I just learned that they are "saffron" finches.) Overall, we had an excellent time staying at the Kona Comfort vacation rental house and would definitely recommend booking there to others visiting the Kona coast of the Big Island. There were tons of well thought out little details that came together to create a stress free vacation where we could just focus on having fun. |
