Spencer Beach Park is a popular attraction for snorkeling,
sunbathing and camping. It is located just north of
Mauna Kea Beach along the Kohala Coast on the Kona side of the
Big Island of Hawaii. This park was named after the Hawaiian politician Samuel Mahuka Spencer who lived from 1875 to 1960 and was responsible for many improvements to the Big Island including easing public access to the scenic Waipio Valley. To reach Spencer Beach from Kailua-Kona, take Hwy 19 north and turn left on Hwy 270 about a mile past Mauna Kea. Then turn left on Kawaihae-Mahukona Road at the sign for Spencer Beach Park. If you have a GPS unit, the park should be listed in the POI (points of interest) database. The park is open 24 hours a day and there is no entrance or parking fee. Campers are required to obtain a permit. |
