After
visiting
Coconut Island State Park and the
Queen Lili'uokalani Japanese Garden in Hilo, we took a short
drive north west over to Wailuku River State Park to check out the
80 foot tall Rainbow Falls. To reach Rainbow Falls using a GPS unit, enter the intersection of Waianuenue Ave and Rainbow Drive. Then keep right on Rainbow Dr. and follow the signs. Wailuku River State Park and/or Rainbow Falls should also be listed in the GPS unit's POI (points of interest) database. There is no entrance fee and the parking lot was relatively empty on a weekday. I imagine it could get crowded on weekends. An easy walk from the parking lot leads to a convenient viewing platform. Wailuku River State Park is open to visitors every day of the year during daylight hours. Guest services include water fountains, garbage cans and restrooms. |

Ancient Cave |

Just below Rainbow Falls, there is a large ancient cave which Hawaiian legends say is the home of "Hina", the mother of the demigod Maui. The falls got their name from the colorful rainbows that commonly appear each morning out of the fine mist that sprays up from the turquoise waters below. | ||
