The
Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo & Gardens is a totally free attraction
situated in Hilo on the "wet" east side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Hilo City receives about 130 inches of rain per year, which has helped create the lush green foliage and colorful flowers that surround the animal habitats. The unique geographical location of the Panaewa Zoo lends it the title of "the only natural tropical rainforest zoo in the United States". To reach the Panaewa Zoo using a GPS unit, enter 800 Stainback Hwy, Hilo, HI 96720 as the address. It is located a few miles south of Hilo and the airport off Hwy 11. For more information via phone, contact the zoo staff at (808) 959-7224. Visitors are welcome daily from 9 AM to 4 PM. |

The white bengal tiger, named Namaste, is fed every day at 3:30. His daily meal includes three whole chickens, ten pounds of meat, ground up bones and various vitamins.
Children will love the petting zoo at the Panaewa Zoo that takes places every Saturday from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM. There is also a butterfly garden located near the entrance to the zoo.
