Holoholakai Beach Park isn't a traditional beach since there is no golden brown sand like many other beaches on the Big Island of Hawaii. Instead it is covered with small to medium sized black and white volcanic rocks. But there is a great view, tidal pools, and the nearby Puako Petroglyphs Park and the Malama Petroglyph Trail for visitors to enjoy. To reach the Holoholokai Beach Park from our vacation rental in Kailua-Kona, we drove about 45 minutes (30 miles) North on Hwy 19 and turned left on Mauna Lani Drive. Then turned right on N. Kaniku Drive and right again on Holoholokai Beach Park Road. This is a free public park with plenty of parking, restrooms, BBQ grills, and picnic tables. The gates open at 6:30 AM and close at 6:30 PM.
