Coconut
Island State Park is a small recreational area accessible by a foot
bridge near Banyan Drive, Liliuokalani Gardens and the Hilo Hawaiian
Hotel on the Big Island of
Hawaii. This tiny island recreational area is located in Hilo Bay on the "rainy side" of the Big Island that gets about 150 to over 180 inches of rain per year. We were lucky enough to visit Hilo and Coconut Island on a rare sunny day. Other people were taking advantage of the day by sunbathing, fishing, paddleboarding, swimming and picnicking at the park. If you visit Coconut Island Park, be sure to watch the water closely as you cross over the bridge. Green sea turtles frequent the area. We spotted at least two or three of them while walking to and from the island on the elevated bridge. |

Coconut Island State Park features a large grassy field in the center, a few small sandy beaches, picnic areas, restrooms, a diving platform and a great view of Hilo Bay. The island is also known by the name Moku Ola, which means "healing island", due to the ancient Hawaiian temple that used to reside here. | ||
