Waialea
Bay Beach, or "Beach 69" as it is known by the locals, was one of
our favorite places to go snorkeling during our all too brief 10 day
stay on the Big Island of
Hawaii. Beach 69 is located along the Kohala Coast in the North Kona area of the Big Island just south of Hapuna Beach Park. To reach Waialea Bay Beach with a GPS unit, set it for the intersection of Puako Beach Drive and Old Puako Rd. Turn right (north) on Old Puako Road and continue about 1000 ft until you can turn left on a small road marked by a "Beach Access" sign. (There used to be a # 69 public utility telephone pole, which is how Beach 69 got it's name.) The beach is about 30 miles (45 minutes) north on Hwy 19 from the popular tourist town Kailua-Kona. It is well worth the drive to enjoy the secluded white sandy beach, large shade trees and excellent snorkeling in Waialea Bay. |

The beach
originally had no guest services but was relatively recently upgraded with a
small paved parking lot, showers, restrooms, water fountains, and a few
picnic tables.
We had to park in the dirt flanking each side of the narrow paved road as did many people since the paved parking lot fills up quickly each morning. |
