One
afternoon after a long morning of snorkeling, we decided to take the
free brewery tour that the Kona Brewing Company offers every day at
3 PM. (Update - The last time we visited the tour is now $5.) There's also a 10:30 AM tour for those of you who'd rather sample some tasty beers in the morning instead of waiting till the afternoon. We arrived to the brewery about 10 minutes before the 3 PM tour was about to begin. The hostess at the Kona Brewing Co. restaurant greeted us and added our names to the 3 PM tour list. The Kona Brewing Co. is located at 75-5629 Kuakini Hwy, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, 96740. To reach the staff by phone, call (808) 334-BREW (2739). |

The restaurant is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 AM to 11 PM and on Friday and Saturday from 11 AM to 11 PM. We didn't get a chance to eat at the Kona Brewing Co. restaurant, but we heard excellent reviews from other people on the brewery tour and the food smelled great. | ||
The actual tour was
brief yet informative with the brewery representative explaining the entire
process of brewing beer.
I think everyone on the tour appreciated that it didn't take long for us to all sit down at a long table in the outdoor section of the restaurant for a beer sampling session. Our tour guide gave us menus with the names and brief descriptions of their beers and then poured everyone shot glass sized samples of each variety with multiple refills upon request. Some of the beers that the Kona Brewing Co. produces include Big Wave Golden Ale, Duke's Blonde Ale, Lavaman Red Ale, Black Sand Porter, Hula Hefeweizen, Fire Rock Pale Ale, Pipeline Porter, Wailua Wheat, Longboard Island Lager and Castaway India Pale Ale. |

Overall, I highly
recommend the Kona Brewing Co. brewery tour for any beer lover visiting the
Kailua-Kona area or anywhere else on the Big Island. I'm hoping we'll get a
chance to go back some day, take the tour again, and actually try the food
at the restaurant that we heard so much about from the other people in our
tour group. For more of our
