This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second
generation (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and facelifted 2022) Jeep Compass
SUV in changing a burnt out license plate light bulb located in the tailgate
door for the cargo area. Owners of other Jeep, Dodge and RAM vehicles such as the Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Renegade, Gladiator, Cherokee, Grand Wagoneer, Wagoneer, Charger, Challenger, Durango, RAM 1500, Promaster, 2500 and 3500 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. This 2019 Jeep Compass Trailhawk 4X4 was equipped with LED license plate lights that should last for a very long time. The OEM LED housing part number is Mopar 68211290 AB (or 68211290AB) 12V 1.2W (also known as Daioku 14-4415). If you have an earlier (2017 or 2018) Jeep Compass with the traditional incandescent light bulbs, the part number is 2825 (also known as W5W). To upgrade the traditional incandescent light bulbs, install some compatible replacement 2825 LED bulbs. To view pictures and instructions for changing the incandescent light bulbs in earlier Compass model years, check out my Jeep Cherokee License Plate Bulbs Replacement Guide or the Jeep Renegade License Plate Bulbs Replacement Guide. The procedure for replacing the driver side and passenger side light housings are the same. The only tool needed to remove and replace the light housings is a flat head screwdriver or a small plastic pry bar tool. |

light housing. Then pull the left side of the housing down out of the tailgate door. Repeat the process if you are also replacing the LED housing on the other side. |

Light Housing Separated |
LED Housing Removed |
Use a small flat
head screwdriver to push in the release tab on the electrical connector
attached to the right side of the housing. Tip - If both of your OEM LED license plates lights are not working, check for a burnt out fuse in the engine bay, interior passenger compartment or cargo area electrical panels. |

The part numbers on
the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) LED light housing were as follows:
Daioku Lens 12V 1.2W 14-4415 and Mopar 68211290 AB (or 68211290AB). If your 2017 or 2018 Compass is equipped with the traditional incandescent light bulbs, rotate the base of the bulb socket on the side of the light housing 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction to remove it. Pull the old 2825 (or W5W) light bulb straight out of the socket. Push a new 2825 (or 2825 LED) bulb into the socket. Reinsert the bulb socket into the housing and rotate it 1/4 turn in the clockwise direction. |
