Gently Pry Out Housing
This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the first generation (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and possibly also the 2019 and 2020 model years) Jeep Renegade SUV in changing a burnt out license plate light bulb in the tailgate or upgrade them both to brighter LED units.

Owners of other Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, RAM or Fiat vehicles such as the 200, 300, Pacifica, Town & Country, Avenger, Charger, Challenger, Journey, Dart, Durango, Magnum, Grand Caravan, Fiat 500 500X or 500L, Fiat 124 Spider, Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Compass, Liberty, Patriot, ProMaster, 1500 and C/V Tradesman minivan may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A compatible replacement miniature wedge base light bulb is part number 2825 (also known as the # W5W).

You can also choose to install some brighter 2825 LED bulbs.

The only tool needed to access and replace the light bulbs is a small flathead screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool.

1/4 Turn Counterclockwise
To prevent from scratching the painted or plastic surfaces, I recommend either covering the tip of your screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth or use a plastic pry bar tool.

Insert the blade of the tool in between the left side of the light housing (on either the driver or passenger side) and the tailgate door.

Gently pry out the left side of the light housing to release the retaining clip.

Carefully pull the light housing out of the tailgate.

Rotate the black plastic bulb socket 1/4 turn counterclockwise before removing it from the housing.

If the old light bulb was recently turned on, be careful when you remove it. It might still be hot enough to burn your fingers.

Pull the old light bulb straight out of the socket.

Push a new number 2825 miniature wedge base light bulb straight in to the socket.

You can also choose to install some brighter 2825 LED bulbs.

(The 2825 bulbs are also known as part number "W5W".)

Re-insert the bulb socket in to the housing and rotate it 1/4 turn clockwise to secure it in place.

Then re-insert the wires and the right (passenger) side of the housing back in to the opening on the underside of the tailgate.
