This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the 6th generation (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and probably also the upcoming 2021 model year) Hyundai Elantra sedan in taking off the plastic interior door panels in order to upgrade the OEM speakers, add soundproofing material, fix a faulty electrical switch or replace a broken power window motor.

Owners of other Hyundai, Genesis or Kia vehicles such as the Sonata, Accent, Veloster, Ioniq, Kona, Nexo, Venue, Tucson, Santa Fe, Palisade, G70, G80, G90, Soul, Sportage, Niro, Sorento, Telluride, Rio, Forte, Optima, Stinger, Cadenza, K900, Sedona and Seltos may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The tools needed to complete this procedure include a plastic pry bar tool and a Phillips head screwdriver.

To remove the OEM door speaker, you will need an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet or a Phillips head screwdriver.

The power window motor can be removed with a Torx T20 star bit screwdriver or a 7mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet.

The first two steps are to fully lower the power window and open the door.

Locate the triangular shaped black plastic "sail" panel at the top inner corner of the door panel.

Use the plastic pry bar tool to gently pull off the sail panel.

Set the sail panel aside in a safe place.

On some Hyundai / Kia models, the sail panel may contain a tweeter speaker with an electrical connector that will have to be unplugged.

Move to the door pull handle and storage well in the center of the armrest.

Locate the small notch (cutout) on the rear edge of the plastic screw cover in the bottom of the door pull handle well.

Use a small flat head screwdriver to gently pry open the screw cover.

Continue pulling out the pop rivets all along the bottom edge and both sides of the door panel.

Hold Panel Near Frame
Push in the release tab on the electrical connector for the door speaker before sliding it straight out of its socket.

Remove the four bolts that secure the speaker to the door frame by turning them in the counterclockwise direction with an 8mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet.

The OEM front door speakers can be replaced with aftermarket car speakers in these sizes: 6 1/2" and 6 3/4".

I highly recommend applying some Dynamat sound deadener to the metal door frame and the back side of the door panel.

The sound deadener will help stop the vibrations and rattles when you turn up the volume on your new speakers.

If you need to change a broken power window motor, the fasteners can be removed with a Torx T20 screwdriver or a 7mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet.

To replace the plastic door panel, hold it near the metal door frame and tilt the top edge towards yourself to access the back side of the panel.

Gently pop the plastic screw cover down into place.

Sit inside the car, close the door and verify that the door opener handle, door lock rocker switch, power window switch, power door lock switch and the speakers are all still working properly.

Be sure to write down the speaker upgrade or any repair procedure in your vehicle's service records.
