How to change a burnt out high mount 3rd
brake light bulb in a 6th generation 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 Elantra.

| This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the 6th
generation (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and maybe also the 2021 model
year) Hyundai Elantra sedan in changing a burnt out high mount third brake
light bulb located in the housing attached to the rear deck near the trunk
lid. Owners of other Hyundai, Genesis or Kia vehicles such as the Sonata, Accent, Veloster, Ioniq, Kona, Nexo, Venue, Tucson, Santa Fe, Palisade, G70, G80, G90, Soul, Sportage, Niro, Sorento, Telluride, Rio, Forte, Optima, Stinger, Cadenza, K900, Sedona and Seltos may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The compatible replacement bayonet style light bulb part number is P21W. If you would like to have a brighter 3rd brake light, install a P21W LED bulb. No tools are needed to access and replace the bulb. The first step is to open the trunk lid. Then look up at the roof of the cargo area. The 3rd brake light bulb socket is situated behind the cargo area light housing. |

| Grasp the white plastic base of the bulb socket and rotate it 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction before pulling it straight out of the housing. | ||

 Push Down 1/4 Turn CW |
| Push the old light
bulb straight down into the socket and rotate it 1/4 turn in the
counterclockwise direction before pulling it straight out. Install the new bayonet style number P21W light by pushing it down into the socket and rotating it 1/4 turn in the clockwise direction to secure it into place. If you would like to have a brighter third brake light, install a compatible replacement P21W LED bulb. |

| Re-insert the bulb
socket into the housing and rotate it 1/4 turn in the clockwise direction to
secure it into place. Double check that the bulb socket is securely in place. To test the new bulb, have an assistant step on the brake pedal. Tip - If you installed an LED bulb and it doesn't work, try removing it from the socket, rotating it 180 degrees and then pushing it back into place. Some LED bulbs are "polarized" and will only work when the "+" positive and "-" negative electrical contacts are in the correct orientation.
