This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and probably also the face-lifted 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 model years of the Ford Edge SUV in changing weak, failing or faulty gas-charged lift support struts for the tailgate door to the cargo area.

Owners of other Ford and Lincoln vehicles such as the Escape, Expedition, EcoSport, Flex, Explorer, Fiesta, Focus, Fusion, Mustang, Taurus, Ranger, Transit Connect, F-150, Endura, C-Max, Kuga, Mondeo, MKZ, Navigator, Aviator, Nautilus and Continental may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

There are a variety of aftermarket manufacturers that offer compatible replacement Ford Edge Tailgate Support Struts on Amazon.

The only tool needed to remove and replace the struts is a flat head screwdriver.

The first two steps are to open the tailgate door and then wedge a towel or a cardboard box between the tailgate and the opening of the cargo area.

The towel or cardboard box will help support the tailgate while you are replacing the strut on the other side.

It would be best to have an assistant hold the tailgate open while you replace the struts for extra safety.

Pull Off Old Strut
To release the old strut from the ball mounts at the top and bottom of the assembly, use the flat head screwdriver to gently pry out the metal retaining clips.

Place the blade of the screwdriver under the center of the "C" shaped metal retaining clip before prying it out.

You don't need to fully remove the metal retaining clip.

Once the clip has been released, firmly pull the socket on the strut off the ball joint mounting point.

Double check that the support strut is securely attached to the top and bottom mounting points.

Remove the towels or cardboard boxes from the other side of the tailgate door.
