light bulb in the tailgate of a 2nd generation 2015 to 2019 Ford Edge.

This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second
generation 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and perhaps also the face-lifted 2019,
2020, 2021 and 2022 model years of the Ford Edge SUV in changing a burnt out
license plate light bulb in the housings attached to the tailgate door for
the cargo area or upgrading both of them to brighter LED bulbs. Owners of other Ford and Lincoln vehicles such as the Escape, Expedition, EcoSport, Flex, Explorer, Fiesta, Focus, Fusion, Mustang, Taurus, Ranger, Transit Connect, F-150, Endura, C-Max, Kuga, Mondeo, MKZ, Navigator, Aviator, Nautilus and Continental may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The compatible replacement miniature wedge base light bulb part number is 168 from manufacturers such as Sylvania, GE, Eiko and PIAA. If you would like to have brighter license plate lights that will also last a lot longer, install some 168 LED bulbs. The only tool required to remove the light housings and access the bulb sockets is a small flathead screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool. |

Removing Other Housing |
The steps to remove
the driver or passenger side license plate light housings are the same. I found it easiest to first slightly loosen the light housing by inserting the flat head screwdriver or plastic pry bar tool into the left edge of the housing first. Then move to the right side and push in the metal retaining clip before pulling down the light housing. Avoid using excessive force. The light housing should pop out relatively easily. Pull out the right side of the housing after you have released the metal retaining clip. |

1/4 Turn Counterclockwise |
Remove the housing
from the opening in the underside of the tailgate. Avoid pulling too hard on the electrical wires. Rotate the round black plastic bulb socket 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction. |

Bulb Socket Removed |
Pull Out Old Light Bulb |
Old Light Bulb Removed |
Pull the bulb
socket straight out of the housing. Carefully pull the old light bulb straight out of the socket. If you have trouble removing a stuck, stubborn or rusted in light bulb, try gently wiggling it back and forth while pulling it straight out. Try to avoid using excessive pressure on the old light bulb. I once had an old bulb pop between my fingers and cause some cuts. |

1/4 Turn Clockwise - Lock |
Push a new number
168 miniature wedge base light
bulb straight into the socket. If you would like to have brighter license plate lights, install some compatible replacement 168 LED bulbs. Re-insert the bulb socket back into the opening in the housing and rotate it 1/4 turn in the clockwise direction to secure it into place. |

Re-Insert Wires First |
Pop In Retaining Clip |
Replace Right Housing |
First, re-insert
the wires on the left side of the housing back into the underside of the
tailgate. Then gently snap in the metal retaining clip on the right side of the housing. You should feel or hear the housing "click" securely into place. |

Test New Light Bulb |
To test the new
light bulbs, turn on the parking lights or headlights, or press the "Unlock"
button on the fob to re-activate the exterior lights. If you installed LED bulbs and they don't work, try removing them from the socket, rotate them 180 degrees and push them back into the socket. Some LED bulbs are polarized and will only work when the "+" positive and "-" negative metal electrical contacts are in the correct orientation. Be sure write down the bulb change in your vehicle's service records.
