reverse bulb in the tail lights of a 1st generation 2010 to 2017 Volvo XC60 SUV.

This
automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist
owners of the first generation (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015,
2016 and 2017) Volvo XC60 SUV in changing a burnt out brake or
reverse bulb in the tail light housings. Owners of other Volvo vehicles such as the XC90, XC70, S90, S80, S60, S40, C30, C70, V90, V70, V60 and V40 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The compatible replacement light bulb part numbers are as follows: Brake # P21W or 7506 and Reverse # P21W or 7506. (If you need to change the rear turn signal, it is a more difficult process: Volvo XC60 Rear Turn Signal Bulb Guide.) No tools are needed to access and replace the brake and reverse light bulbs. |

Pull Off Fabric Cover |
Access Panel Removed |
Plastic Clips - Back Side |
The first two steps
are to open the tailgate door and move to the side of the SUV with the burnt
out tail light bulb. Gently pull the square shaped fabric access cover out of the rear corner of the cargo area's carpet liner. Set the access cover aside in a safe place. |
||
Brake & Reverse Sockets |
Reverse - Brown Plastic |
1/4 Turn Counterclockwise |
Once the cover is
out of the way, you'll easily be able to access the reverse and brake light
bulb sockets. (If you need to replace the turn signal bulb, check out my Volvo XC60 Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement Guide.) The brown plastic reverse light bulb is the upper socket. Rotate the socket 1/4 turn counterclockwise before pulling it straight out of the housing. |

Push Down & 1/4 Turn CC |
Old Reverse Bulb Socket |
Push Down & 1/4 Turn C |
Push the old bulb

Brake Bulb Socket |
1/4 Turn Counterclockwise |
Re-insert the
reverse bulb socket in to the housing and rotate it 1/4 turn clockwise to
secure it in place. The brake light bulb socket is located just below the reverse bulb. Rotate the grey plastic brake light bulb socket 1/4 turn counterclockwise before pulling it straight out of the housing. |
||
Push Down & 1/4 Turn CC |
Install New Bulb |
1/4 Turn Clockwise - Lock |
Push the old bulb
down in to the socket and rotate it 1/4 turn counterclockwise before pulling
it straight out. Push a new number P21W bulb in to the socket and rotate it 1/4 turn clockwise to secure it in place. Re-insert the brake light bulb socket in to the housing and rotate it 1/4 turn clockwise. |
||
Re-Insert Top Tab |
Push On Access Cover |
Test New Light Bulb |
Line up the fabric
access cover and re-insert the tab at the top edge. Then push on the lower part to secure the two plastic retaining clips. To test the new tail light bulbs, have someone step on the brake pedal and shift the transmission in to reverse. Unfortunately, changing the rear turn signal light bulb is a much more involved process.
