This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the 6th generation MK6 (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 & 2016) Volkswagen Jetta in changing a burnt out dome or map light bulb in the overhead console.

Owners of other VW Group vehicles with similar dome or map light bulb housings such as the Passat, CC, Tiguan, Golf, Touareg, Beetle, GTI, SportWagen, Eos, Rabbit, Bora, Vento, Audi A3, A4, S4, A6, S6, A7, A8, Q5, Q7, A5, S5, and TT may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A replacement "festoon" or "fuse" type dome light bulb is part number 6411 (41mm in size).

You can also use the slightly shorter 35mm # 6418 bulb or a brighter LED unit.

New miniature wedge base map light bulbs are part number 2825.

You may also use the # 168, 158, 194, W5W or a compatible LED unit.

The only tool needed to replace the bulbs is a small flathead screwdriver.

To avoid scratching the plastic surfaces, you may choose to cover the tip of the screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth.

Insert the blade of the small flathead screwdriver in between the the lens cover and the overhead console at the sides or near the front edge.

Very gently pry out the lens cover from the overhead console.

You may need to re-position the screwdriver and pry at the opposite side edge or another section of the front edge. Do not pry out the rear edge of the cover and do not use excessive force.

Set the lens cover aside in a safe place.

To remove the map light bulbs, grasp the bulb with your thumb and forefinger before pulling it straight out of the socket.

Push a new number 2825 bulb straight in to the socket.

You may also use any other miniature wedge base bulbs such as the # 168, 158, 194, W5W or a brighter LED unit.

Pull the old dome light bulb straight out of the socket and push in a new # 6411 bulb or a brighter LED unit approximately 41mm or 1.61" (inches) in size.

If necessary, you may also be able to use the slightly shorter 35mm # 6418 festoon style bulb.

(Hint: If you are replacing the dome light with an LED bulb and it does not work at first, try flipping the bulb around in the opposite way within the socket.)
