This automotive maintenance tutorial
was specifically written to assist owners of the fifth generation
(2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019) Subaru Outback wagon in changing a burnt out
vanity mirror light bulb in the sun visors. Owners of other Subaru vehicles such as the Forester, Impreza, Legacy, XV Crosstrek, WRX, BRZ, SVX, Tribeca, Exiga, Trezia, Levorg and Baja may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. A few compatible replacement miniature fuse style vanity mirror light bulbs with their part numbers include the following: TS-14V1CP, 6614F, ACDelco 13502343 and General 66140. You can also use a compatible LED miniature fuse light bulb. The only tool needed to access and change the vanity mirror light bulb is a small plastic pry bar tool or a flathead screwdriver. |

Pull Out Old Light Bulb |
Old Light Bulb Removed |
To prevent from
scratching the plastic surfaces, you may choose to either cover the tip of
your screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth or instead use a plastic
pry bar tool. Insert the blade of the flathead screwdriver in between the bottom edge of the lens cover and the light housing. Gently pry out the retaining clip. Pull down the lens cover to disengage the plastic tab on the top edge of the cover. Set the lens cover aside in a safe place. Be careful when you remove the old light bulb. If it was recently turned on, it might still be hot enough to burn your fingers. Use the flathead screwdriver or the plastic pry bar tool to very gently pry out the bottom edge of the old light bulb. Only pry on the metal end caps of the light bulb. Do not apply pressure to the glass center part of the old light bulb. Warning: If you apply pressure to the glass part of the light bulb, you may shatter it and send shards of glass flying into your face and eyes. Pull the old light bulb straight out of the socket. |

The OEM light bulb
in this 2017 Outback was part number TS-14V1CP74. Push a new miniature fuse light bulb such as part number TS-14V1CP or 6614F straight into the socket. If you would like to have brighter vanity mirror lights, install some compatible LED bulbs. (Tip - If you installed LED bulbs and it doesn't work at first, try removing it and rotating it 180 degrees before pushing it back into the socket. Some LED bulbs are "polarized" and can only be installed in one orientation.) |

Test New Vanity Lights |
Line up the
translucent plastic lens cover with the light housing. First, re-insert the tab at the top edge of the lens cover. Then swing closed the bottom edge of the lens cover and gently snap the retaining clip back into place. To test the new vanity mirror light bulbs, flip open the plastic mirror cover. If the lights don't turn on, you may need to press the "unlock" button on the key fob to re-activate the interior lights or close and open the door. Be sure to record the bulb change in your vehicle's service records. For more,
