This automotive maintenance tutorial
was specifically written to assist owners of the fifth generation
(2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 model years) Subaru Outback wagon in changing a burnt out map
light bulb located in the overhead console. Owners of other Subaru vehicles such as the Forester, Impreza, Legacy, XV Crosstrek, WRX, BRZ, SVX, Tribeca, Exiga, Trezia, Levorg and Baja may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The compatible replacement "festoon" style light bulb is part number DE3175. You can also use a brighter DE3175 LED bulb. The only tool needed to access and replace the map light bulbs is a small flathead screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool. |

To prevent from
scratching the plastic surfaces, you may choose to either cover the tip of
your screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth or use a plastic
pry bar tool. Insert the blade of your flathead screwdriver in between the inner edge of the lens cover and the overhead console. Gently pry out the lens cover and set it aside in a safe place. Try to avoid using excessive force. The lens cover should pop out relatively easily. Be careful when you remove the old light bulb. If it was recently turned on, the bulb might still be hot enough to burn your fingers. Pull the old light bulb straight out of the socket. |

The OEM festoon
style light bulb was marked as part number Toshiba 12V8WAL:72. Push a new part number DE3175 light bulb straight into the socket. Wipe off the new bulb with a paper towel and some rubbing alcohol. Any grease or oil left on the new bulb may create a hot spot and cause the bulb to fail prematurely. Alternatively, you could wear gloves while installing the new bulb to keep it clean. If you would like to have brighter map lights, install some compatible replacement DE3175 LED bulbs. To test the new light bulb, press the white plastic "On / Off" button. Line up the translucent plastic lens cover with the light housing. |
