This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the 2004,
2005 and 2006 Scion xA in cleaning or changing the A/C system's cabin air
filter element located in the HVAC blower motor housing. Owners of other Scion or Toyota vehicles such as the xB, tC, xD, iQ, iM, iA, Echo, Yaris and FR-S may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. A few compatible replacement filters with their part numbers are as follows: Fram FCF10139, TYC 800017P, PotAuto MAP 1006W, EcoGard XC10332C, Bosch P3750WS and Denso 453-1014. No tools are required to access and replace the filter. A wet/dry shop vacuum could be helpful for cleaning the old filter or removing any debris from the filter slot. The first few steps are to sit in the front passenger seat, open the glove box and empty out the contents. (Some Scion models may be equipped with a damper arm or string on the right outer side wall that will need to be detached.) Firmly push in the two side walls of the glove box until the plastic side stops can be released from behind the dashboard. Lower the glove box down towards the floor mat. Don't worry if the plastic hinges come apart. They can be easily re-attached later on. |

Push In Release Tab |
If the glove box
came off the dashboard, set it aside in a safe place. Once the glove box is out of the way, you'll be able to see the white plastic HVAC blower motor housing and the rectangular shaped filter access cover. There are two tabs on the filter cover with one on the left side and the other on the right side. |

Release Right Side Clip |
Slide Out Filter & Tray |
Inspect Both Sides |
Push in the two
tabs to release the retaining clips. Slide the white plastic filter tray straight out of the slot in the HVAC blower motor housing. Pull the old filter element out of the plastic tray. Inspect both sides of the old filter. If the old filter is dark gray or black and clogged with dirt, dust, pollen, soot, leaves, insects, hair, sand and other debris, it should be replaced with a brand new element. I recommend purchasing the Bosch P3750WS cabin air filter since it has excellent reviews from other Scion owners. If the old filter is relatively clean, just tap out the large debris into a trash can and remove any fine dust with a wet/dry shop vacuum. Check the filter slot for any large debris. If necessary, clean out the slot with the crevice attachment of your wet/dry shop vacuum. |

Re-Attach Hinges |
Pop In Two Side Stops |
Push on the filter
access cover to secure the two retaining clips. You should feel or hear the clips "click" securely into place. Double check that the tray is securely attached before moving on to the next steps. Line up the plastic hinges on the bottom of the glove box with the mounting bars on the lower edge of the dashboard. Re-attach the hinges and swing the glove box up towards the dashboard. If your Scion is equipped with a damper arm or damper string, re-attach it to the right outer side wall of the glove box. Firmly push in the two side walls of the glove box and re-insert the two plastic side stoppers in behind the dashboard. Replace the contents of the glove box and close it to complete the job. Be sure to write down the filter change in your vehicle's service records. Enjoy the fresh clean air from your A/C
system! |
