This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 Nissan Qashqai and the 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 Nissan Rogue Sport (USA) in changing a failing or faulty mass air flow (MAF) sensor in the air intake for the MR20DD 2.0 liter inline four cylinder engine.

Owners of other Nissan, Infiniti or related Renault vehicles such as the Rogue, X-Trail, Note, Versa, Altima, Maxima, Sentra, Juke, Kicks, Murano, Pathfinder, Armada, Frontier, Titan, Quest, NV200, Q50, Q60, QX50, QX60, QX80 and Renault Kadjar may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

Some of the symptoms of a dirty, failing or faulty MAF sensor include hard starting, stalling, hesitating, surging, jerking, black smoke from the exhaust, lowered fuel economy (reduced MPG), rough idling, poor acceleration and a CEL (check engine light) or SES (service engine soon) warning indicator on the dashboard.

If you have an OBDII scanner (also known as an OBD2 scan tool), the MAF sensor related DTC (diagnostic trouble codes) you might see include P0100, P0101, P0102, P0103 and P0104.

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) mass air flow sensor installed in this 2020 Rogue Sport with the MR20DD 2.0L I4 engine was part number Hitachi AFH60M-48 (also known as AFH60M48, 22680BV80B, 22680-BV80B, 22680-5RB0A or 226807S00A).

Two compatible replacement aftermarket sensors with their part numbers include the following: Jesben 22680-BV80B and Delphi AF10539.

The tools needed to replace the sensor include a 7mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet or a Phillips head screwdriver.

If you'd like to try cleaning the old sensor before spending the money on a new one, I recommend using CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner.

The first two steps are to open the hood and then move to the right (driver) side of the engine bay.

The MAF sensor is located on the left side of the plastic engine air filter housing next to the rubber air intake hose.

Push in the release button on the electrical connector before sliding it straight off the old sensor.

Loosen the two silver metal bolts a few turns in the counterclockwise direction with the 7mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet.

You could also use a Phillips head screwdriver.

Once the bolts are loose, spin them out the last few turns with your fingertips to help prevent them from falling down and becoming lost in the engine bay.

Set the two bolts aside in a safe place.

Spin In Bolts By Hand
If you'd like to try cleaning the old sensor, gently spray the "hot wire" with some CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner.

Allow the sensor to air dry. Do not shake the sensor or use compressed air to dry the hot wire.

Orientate the sensor with the bolt holes in the correct position.

Slide the sensor into the port.

Spin in the two bolts a few turns by hand in the clockwise direction to help prevent them from becoming cross threaded or falling down into the engine bay.

Tighten the two bolts by turning them in the clockwise direction with the Phillips head screwdriver or a 7mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet until they are snug.

Try to avoid over tightening the bolts to prevent from cracking the plastic sensor housing.

Start Engine - Test Sensor
Push the electrical connector straight over the top of the new sensor.

You should feel or hear the power plug "click" securely into place.

Use an OBDII scanner to clear any MAF sensor related DTC.

To test the new sensor, start the engine and listen closely for any strange sounds. If you do hear a weird noise, turn off the ignition and double check your work.

Take the car for a short test drive and see if any of the previous symptoms re-appear.

Be sure to write down the sensor change or cleaning in your SUV's service records.
