This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 Nissan Qashqai and the 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 Nissan Rogue Sport (USA) in changing a failing or faulty camshaft position sensor (CMP) on the MR20DD 2.0 liter inline four cylinder engine.

Owners of other Nissan, Infiniti or related Renault vehicles such as the Rogue, X-Trail, Note, Versa, Altima, Maxima, Sentra, Juke, Kicks, Murano, Pathfinder, Armada, Frontier, Titan, Quest, NV200, Q50, Q60, QX50, QX60, QX80 and Renault Kadjar may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A few of the symptoms of a failing or faulty camshaft position sensor include the following: hard starting, rough idling, stalling, surging, poor fuel economy (lowered MPG), automatic transmission shifting issues, poor acceleration, jerking and a CEL / SES (check engine light / service engine soon) warning on the gauge cluster.

If you have an OBD2 scanner (also known as an OBDII scan tool), some of the camshaft position sensor related DTC (diagnostic trouble codes) you might discover include P0340, P0341, P0342, P0343 and P0344.

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) part number is Nissan 23731-1KC1A (also known as part # 237311KC1A or 23731 1KC1A).

Two other compatible replacement aftermarket sensors with their part numbers include the following: Holstein 2CAM0340 and Walker Products 235-1688.

The tools needed to replace the two sensors include a 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet.

The MR20DD 2.0L I4 engine is equipped with two camshaft position sensors.

I'll be replacing the front (intake) sensor in this tutorial.

The rear (exhaust) sensor is also located on the right (driver) side of the engine closer to the rear by the throttle body.

I was also checking the spark plugs, so I removed the black plastic "intake duct" from the top of the engine. This step is not necessary for changing the camshaft sensors. If you'd like to remove the intake duct, check out the instructions on the Nissan Qashqai & Rogue Sport Spark Plugs Replacement Guide.

The front sensor is located just to the right of the oil fill cap.

Push in the release tab on the electrical connector before sliding it straight off the base of the old sensor.

Rotate Back & Forth
Loosen the single silver metal bolt that secures the sensor in place by turning it in the counterclockwise direction with the 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet.

Spin out the bolt the last few turns by hand to make sure it doesn't fall down and become lost in the engine bay.

Set the bolt aside in a safe place.

Gently rotate the old sensor back and forth a few times to make sure the rubber o-ring gasket isn't stuck to the aluminum valve cover.

Pull the old sensor straight out of the port.

Inspect the old sensor for any sludge or damage.

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) part number in this 2020 Rogue Sport with the MR20DD 2.0L I4 engine was Nissan 23731-1KC1A.

Install New Sensor
An optional step is to apply a small amount of new oil to the rubber o-ring gasket on the new sensor to make it easier to install.

Insert the new sensor into the valve cover and line up the bolt holes.

Spin in the bolt a few turns by hand in the clockwise direction to help prevent it from becoming cross threaded.

Tighten the bolt by turning it in the clockwise direction with the 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet until it is snug.

Try to avoid over tightening the bolt to prevent from cracking the plastic sensor housing.

Slide the electrical connector straight on to the new sensor.

You should feel or hear the electrical connector "click" securely into place.

If you removed the intake duct, re-attach the rubber hoses and lower the plastic pegs down into their corresponding rubber grommets.

If you have an OBDII scan tool, clear any camshaft position sensor related DTC.

Start the engine and listen closely for any strange sounds. If everything sounds good, take the SUV for a short and careful test drive to see if any of the issues re-appear.

Be sure to write down the sensor change in your vehicle's service records.
