This
automotive "how-to" guide was specifically written to assist owners
of the 4th generation 2007 to 2012 Nissan Altima in cleaning or
replacing the engine air filter element. Owners of other Nissan or Infiniti vehicles such as the Versa, Maxima, Juke, Rogue, Murano, Xterra, Pathfinder, Sentra, Cube, Armada, Quest, Frontier, Titan, G25, G35, G37, M35 and M37 may also find this guide to be helpful. Ideally the engine's air filter element should be checked and cleaned at every oil change. If the paper filter is very dark, it should be replaced with a new one. Some replacement engine air filters and their part numbers are as follows: Purolator C45871, Purolator Classic A15703, the K&N # 33-2374, Fram CA10349 and Ecogard XA5703. No tools are needed to clean or replace the engine air filter in a Nissan Altima, although a wet/dry shop vacuum can be useful. |

Pull Apart Air Box |
Remove Air Filter Element |
Vacuum Out Dust & Debris |
The first step is
to release the two metal retaining clips that hold the top of the engine air
box together.
Then carefully pull apart the two halves to reveal the paper air filter element. |
||
Fan Out Pleats |
Vacuum Sand From Air Box |
Re-Insert Air Filter |
If the old air
filter looks relatively clean like this Altima's filter, you can just tap
out the large debris and vacuum or blow out the dust with a wet/dry shop
vacuum. It's also a good idea to vacuum out the sand, dust, or other debris that might be in either half of the engine air box. |

Tab On Front Half |
Slot On Rear Box Half |
Fasten Metal Air Box Clips |
Re-install the
cleaned filter or place the brand new filter into the forward half of the
air box with the pleats facing towards the front of the car.
I recommend the Fram CA10349 Extra Guard air filter since it has the best reviews on Amazon. Make sure that the air filter element rests flush against the forward half of the air box and then lower it down. Insert the two plastic tabs on the lower part of the forward half of the air box down into the slots on the rear half of the air box. Then hold the halves together and snap the two metal retaining clips back in place. For more of my
