This automotive "how-to" guide was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation (2010, 2011, 2012 & 2013) Mazda Mazda3 in changing a burnt out license plate light bulb or replacing them both with brighter LED units.

Owners of other Mazda vehicles such as the Mazda2, Mazda5, Mazda6, MX-5 Miata, Mazdaspeed3, CX-5, CX-7, CX-9, MPV, Tribute, RX-8, Axela, Demio, Verisa, Premacy, and Atenza may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A replacement license plate light bulb is part number 2825 from manufacturers such as Sylvania, GE, Eiko and PIAA.

You can also use any other 5 watt miniature wedge base bulbs such as the # 168, W5W, 194 or a compatible LED bulb.

The only tool needed to replace the bulbs is a small flathead screwdriver.

Move to the side of the license plate with the burnt out light bulb and locate the two small black plastic clips on either side of the housing.

Use the blade of the small flathead screwdriver to gently pry out the two clips and release the light housing.

Rotate the light grey light bulb socket on the rear of the housing 1/4 turn counter clockwise.

Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket and push in a new # 2825, W5W or 168 bulb.

You could also upgrade both bulbs to brighter LED units.
