This automotive "how-to" guide was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation (2010, 2011, 2012 & 2013) Mazda 3 in replacing the battery in the combination key fob remote control and flip out ignition key.

Owners of other Mazda vehicles such as the Mazda2, Mazda5, Mazda6, MX-5 Miata, Mazdaspeed3, CX-5, CX-7, CX-9, MPV, Tribute, RX-8, Axela, Demio, Verisa, Premacy, and Atenza may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A replacement coin cell (A.K.A. "button" or "watch") key fob battery is part number CR1620. It is available from various manufacturers such as Panasonic, Duracell, Energizer, Maxell, Sony, and Renata.

The only tool needed to change the key fob battery is a small flathead screwdriver.

Insert Flathead Screwdriver
Press Release Button
Separate Ignition Key
The first step is to press the round silver button and eject the flip out metal ignition key.

Then turn the key fob over so that the empty slot where the ignition key used to reside is facing up towards you.

Insert the blade of the small flathead screwdriver in to the slot and push the small button.

While holding the release button down, pull the ignition key away from the rest of the fob to separate the two pieces.

Set the ignition key aside in a safe place.

Insert the blade of the flathead screwdriver in to the small notch in between the two halves of the remote control unit and gently pry them apart.

Test New Fob Battery
Push the metal ignition key piece back in to the fob until it clicks in to place.

Fold the metal ignition key back down in to the fob and double check that the parts are secure.

Stand near your Mazda3 and press the "Lock" or "Unlock" buttons to test the new key fob battery. If the battery is working properly, the parking lights should flash.
