This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the 4th generation (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 & 2021) Mazda MX-5 Miata in changing the front windshield window wiper blades.

Owners of other Mazda vehicles such as the Mazda2 (Demio), Mazda3 (Axela), Mazda5, Mazda6 (Atenza), CX-3, CX-5, CX-7, CX-9, RX-8 and MPV may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The original OEM wiper blade sizes in inches are as follows: Driver Side (Left) 18" and Passenger Side (Right) 19".

A few compatible replacement wiper blades with their part numbers are as follows: Anco 31-18 & Anco 31-19, PIAA 95045 & PIAA 95048, Trico 16-180 & Trico 16-190 and Bosch 18A & Bosch 19A.

The only tool needed to remove the old wiper blades is a small flathead screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool.

Slide Old Wiper Down
The first step is to lift the wiper arm off the windshield until it remains in the raised position by itself.

Use the plastic pry bar tool or a flathead screwdriver to lift up the bottom of the plastic locking tab in the middle of the old wiper blade.

Swing open the hinged lock tab.

Firmly pull the old wiper blade down until it slides out of the metal hook at the end of the wiper arm.

Rotate the old wiper blade until is perpendicular (at a 90 degree angle) with the wiper arm.

Pull the old wiper blade off the metal hook at the end of the wiper arm.

Place a towel on the windshield to protect the window from being scratched, shattered, scratched or chipped just in case the metal wiper arm smacks down on to the glass while you are replacing the wiper blade.

Line up the new wiper blade with the wiper arm.

The rubber wiper blade should be pointing out away from the windshield.

Pass the end of the wiper arm through the opening in the center of the new wiper blade.

Rotate the new wiper blade until it is parallel with the arm.

Firmly slide the new blade up into the hook.

You should feel or hear the wiper blade "click" securely into place.

Swing down the locking tab and snap it into place.

Double check that the new wiper blade is securely attached to the wiper arm.

For the best wiper performance, thoroughly clean off the window and apply a glass treatment product that will repel water such as Rain-X.

Be sure to record the wiper blade change in your vehicle's service records.
