This
automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist
owners of the first generation (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 & the
refreshed 2016 model year) Mazda CX-5 SUV in changing the front
windshield wiper blades. Owners of other Mazda vehicles such as the Mazda 2, Mazda 3, Mazda 5, Mazda 6, CX-7, CX-9, and the MX-5 Miata may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The OEM windshield wiper blades are the following sizes in inches: Driver Side 24" and Passenger Side 18". A few compatible replacement wiper blades with their part numbers include the following: Bosch 24A & Bosch 18B, Rain-X 5079280-1 & Rain-X 5079275-1, Anco 31-24 & Anco 31-18, Trico 25-240 & Trico 25-180, Silblade WB124S & Silblade WB118S and Michelin 8524 & Michelin 8518. The only tool needed to change the wiper blades is a small flathead screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool used to pry open the plastic lock tab. |

Pry Open Plastic Lock Tab |
Swing Open Lock Tab |
Slide Bracket Down Off Hook |
The first step is
to lift the wiper arm off the windshield until it remains in the raised
position by itself. Then rotate the old wiper blade away from the wiper arm at a slight angle. Use a small flathead screwdriver to pry open the black plastic locking tab at the center of the old wiper blade. You may also use a car key, coin, butter knife, nail file or any other similarly shaped item. Flip open the lock tab. Gently slide the old wiper blade down off the metal hook at the end of the metal wiper arm. |
||
Rotate Blade Away From Arm |
Pass Hook Through Opening |
Old Wiper Blade Removed |
Continue rotating the wiper blade away from the metal wiper arm until it is almost perpendicular. Pass the hook at the end of the metal wiper arm through the opening in the old wiper blade. |

Towel - Protect Glass |
Line Up New Wiper Blade |
Opening & Metal Hook |
Place a towel or
rag down on the windshield to protect the window from being cracked,
shattered, chipped or scratched just in case the metal wiper arm smacks down
on the glass while you are replacing the blade. I recommend buying the Bosch 24A and Bosch 18B wiper blades since they have excellent reviews on Amazon. Line up the opening in the center of the new wiper blade with the metal hook at the end of the metal wiper arm. |
||
Insert Hook Through Blade |
Slide Bracket Up In Hook |
Bracket Secure In Hook |
Pass the metal hook
through the opening in the center of the new wiper blade with the rubber
edge facing up towards the ceiling. Rotate the new wiper blade until it is almost parallel with the wiper arm. Firmly pull the wiper blade up to insert the mounting bracket in to the metal hook. |
||
Swing Closed Locking Tab |
Pop In Lock Tab |
Lower Wiper Arm To Window |
Flip down the
plastic lock tab and gently pop it back in to place. Double check that the new wiper blade is securely attached to the wiper arm. Gently lower the wiper arm down to the windshield. For the best wiper performance, I'd recommend thoroughly cleaning the windshield and applying a window treatment product such as Rain-X. For more,
