How to change the motor oil and replace the filter on the 3.3L V6 engine in a 3rd generation 2015 to 2018 Kia Sedona.

This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the third generation (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and maybe also the updated 2019 and 2020 model years) Kia Sedona minivan in changing the motor oil and replacing the oil filter on the Lambda II GDI 3.3 liter G6DH

Owners of other Kia or Hyundai models such as the Grand Carnival, Sorento, Sportage, Niro, Soul, K900, Stinger, Cadenza, Optima, Rio, Forte, Genesis, Sonata, Ioniq, Santa Fe, Tucson, Elantra and Accent may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A few compatible replacement cartridge style oil filters with their part numbers are as follows: Fram CH10855, Beck Arnley 041-0853, ACDelco PF626G, Hastings Filters LF653, Bosch 3427, Purolator L26127 and Kia 26320-3CAA0.

The tools needed to complete this oil change procedure include a 17mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet, a 27mm socket with a 1" drive ratchet, a floor jack, two jack stands, a used oil catch container, an automotive funnel and 6.02 U.S. quarts of new SAE 5W-30 oil.

The first three steps are to warm up the engine for a few minutes, park the vehicle on a level surface and turn off the ignition.

Warming up the engine will help suspend any contaminants within the old oil and also allow it to drain out more quickly.

Engage the emergency / parking brake and place wheel chocks on both sides of the rear wheels to prevent the car from moving.

Then open the hood, twist off the oil filler cap in the counterclockwise direction and partially remove the yellow handled dipstick an inch or two. Set the oil filler cap aside in a safe place.

Removing the oil filler cap and partially removing the dipstick will help prevent a vacuum from forming to allow the old oil to drain out more quickly.

Carefully raise the front end of the vehicle with the floor jack and securely support it with at least two jack stands.

Please do not solely rely on the floor jack to support the vehicle.

Slide under the engine bay of the minivan with the 17mm socket, a 3/8" drive ratchet and the used oil catch basin.

The black metal oil pan is located closer to the passenger side of the vehicle next to the exhaust pipe.

Loosen Counterclockwise
The black metal oil drain bolt is located at the rear edge of the oil pan. The bolt head faces towards the rear of the vehicle.

Slide the used oil catch container to just below the oil drain bolt.

Loosen the oil drain bolt by turning it in the counterclockwise direction with the 17mm socket and a 3/8" drive ratchet.

Lower Car From Stands
Spin out the oil drain bolt the rest of the way by hand.

Allow the old oil to drain out for at least a few minutes or until the flow slows down to just an occasional drip.

Inspect the washer or "gasket" on the oil drain plug and replace it if necessary.

The OEM part number for the oil drain bolt washer is Hyundai / Kia # 21513-23001 (also known as 2151323001).

Make sure that the old drain bolt washer is not still attached to the engine.

Slide the new washer over the drain bolt. Clean the area around the oil drain hole with a paper towel or a shop rag.

Replace the oil drain bolt by spinning it in the clockwise direction a few turns by hand to prevent it from becoming cross threaded.

Tighten the oil drain bolt with the 17mm socket and a 3/8" drive ratchet to just past hand tight.

If you have a torque wrench, the service manual specifies that the oil drain bolt torque specification is 26 to 33 lb-ft (35-45 Nm).

Double check that the oil drain bolt is tight before moving on to the next steps.

Remove the used oil catch container and other tools from underneath the vehicle.

Carefully lower the vehicle from the jack stands by using the floor jack.

Top of 3.3L V6 Engine
Move to the engine bay and pull off the plastic cover on the top of the engine.

The engine cover is held in place by four rubber friction fasteners attached to metal pegs on the top of the engine.

Locate the round black plastic oil filter cap at the right (driver) side of the engine.

Loosen Counterclockwise
To remove the oil filter cap, you'll need either a 27mm or a 1 1/16" wrench or socket.

Loosen the oil filter cap by turning it in the counterclockwise direction.

Replace Rubber O-Ring
Once the filter cap is loose, spin it out the rest of the way by hand.

Pull the old cartridge style oil filter out of the cap and discard it.

Replace the rubber o-ring gasket on the filter cap with the new one that was included with the new oil filter.

You may need to use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry off the old rubber o-ring.

Push the new o-ring all the way down to the bottom of the threads (closer to the "top" of the cap when it is installed).

I recommend buying the Fram CH10855 engine oil filter since it has excellent reviews on Amazon.

Push the new oil filter into the cap with the plastic peg facing up towards you.

Make sure the new filter is securely seated in the filter cap.

Lower the new filter into the housing and spin in the filter cap a few turns by hand in the clockwise direction to prevent it from becoming cross threaded.

Tighten the filter cap to just barely past finger tight with the 27mm socket or a 1 1/16" wrench.

The shop manual specifies that the filter cap should be tightened to 25.8 lb-ft of torque (35 Nm).

Double check that the filter cap is tight.

Line up the plastic engine cover and push it down into place.

Twist On Oil Filler Cap
Insert the automotive funnel into the oil filler hole at the front left corner of the engine.

The Lambda II 3.3L V6 engine's oil capacity specification for an oil change with a filter replacement is 6.02 U.S. Quarts (or 5.7 liters) of SAE 5W-30 oil.

It is much better to have slightly less oil than necessary in an engine than to run an engine that has been overfilled. Running an engine that has been over filled with oil may lead to sluggish performance or damage to seals and gaskets.

I recommend slowly pouring in only about 5 to 5 1/2 U.S. quarts of the new oil at first.

Then temporarily replace the oil filler cap by twisting it on in the clockwise direction and push the dipstick back down into place.

Start the engine and let it warm up for at least a few minutes.

Then turn off the engine and allow the new oil to drain down to the oil pan for at least five to ten minutes.

Oil Change Complete
Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean with a paper towel, re-insert it and pull it out again to check the oil level.

If necessary, slowly pour in more oil (up to the 6.02 U.S. qt total capacity) and repeatedly check the level on the dipstick until it reaches just at or below the upper hole on the dipstick that indicates the "MAX" (maximum) or "Full" line.

Replace the dipstick and make sure that the oil filler cap is tight.

If your vehicle is equipped with the service indicator system, reset the oil life by following these steps: 1. Turn the ignition switch to the "On" position but do not start the engine. 2. When you hear the chime and see the "wrench" service icon, press and hold the "OK" button to reset the oil change service interval.

If you haven't previously setup the oil life function, you may see "Service Interval Off" on the instrument cluster's LCD screen.

Be sure to record the oil change in your minivan's service records.
