This
automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist
owners of the first generation (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and possibly
also the 2019 and 2020 model years) Jeep Renegade SUV in changing a
burnt out brake, rear turn signal or reverse bulb in the tail light
housings. Owners of other Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, RAM or Fiat vehicles such as the 200, 300, Pacifica, Town & Country, Avenger, Charger, Challenger, Journey, Dart, Durango, Magnum, Grand Caravan, Fiat 500 500X or 500L, Fiat 124 Spider, Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Compass, Liberty, Patriot, ProMaster, 1500 and C/V Tradesman minivan may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The compatible replacement light bulb part numbers are as follows: Brake # 7506 or P21W, Rear Turn Signal # 7506 or P21W and Reverse (Back Up) Light # 921 or W16W. The only tool needed to access and replace the tail light bulbs is a Phillips head screwdriver. |

Access Panel Removed |
Spring Loaded Thumb Screw |
Loosen Counterclockwise |
The first two steps
are to open the tailgate door and then move to the side of the SUV with the
burnt out tail light bulb. Push in the release tab on the black plastic access cover at the rear corner of the cargo area before pulling it open. Set the tail light housing access panel aside in a safe place. Locate the grey plastic and silver metal spring loaded thumb screw that secures the tail light housing to the rear of the SUV. Loosen the thumb screw by turning it with your finger tips in the counterclockwise direction. |
||
Remove Thumb Screw |
Pull Off Tail Light Assembly |
Electrical Connector |
Set the thumb screw
aside in a safe place. Gently pull the tail light assembly straight off the rear corner of the vehicle. The housing is still held in place by plastic pegs or "spikes" inserted in to openings on the rear of the SUV that act as friction fasteners. If you have trouble removing the tail light housing, use a plastic pry bar tool to gently loosen the outer edge of the housing from the SUV. |
||
Disconnect Power Plug |
Tail Light Housing Removed |
Loosen Counterclockwise |
Push in the release
tab on the black plastic electrical connector on the back side of the tail
light housing before sliding the plug straight out of its socket. Set the tail light housing down on a work bench or table with the lens facing down. I'd recommend using a micro fiber towel in between the tail light housing and your work surface to protect the lens cover from being scratched. |

The three bulbs are contained within a grey plastic bracket that is attached to the back side of the tail light housing with four screws. | ||

Push Down & 1/4 Turn CW |
To replace either
the brake or rear turn signal light bulbs, push the old bulb down in to the
socket and rotate it 1/4 turn counterclockwise before pulling it straight
out of the socket. (The OEM brake and rear turn signal bulbs were marked as part number GE 1057F.) |
||

Push In New Reverse Bulb |
|
Push a new bayonet
style base number
7506 or
P21W light bulb straight
down in to the socket and rotate it 1/4 turn clockwise to secure it in
place. Pull the old reverse light bulb straight out of the socket. Push a new miniature wedge base number 921 or W16W light bulb straight in to the socket. If you would like to have brighter reverse light bulbs, install some compatible 921 LED bulbs. |

Re-insert the
plastic tabs on the front edge of the access cover in to the opening in the
cargo area panel. Then gently pop in the retaining clip on the rear edge of the access cover to secure it in place. To test the new tail light bulbs, have an assistant step on the brake pedal, activate the hazard signals and place the transmission in reverse. For more,
