This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the refreshed, "revised" or post "facelift" first generation 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and early 2017 model year Jeep Compass in changing a burnt out map light bulb in the overhead console or replacing them both with brighter LED bulbs.

Owners of other Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep or RAM vehicles such as the Avenger, 200, 300, Town & Country, Challenger, Charger, Dart, Durango, Journey, Patriot, Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, 1500, 2500, 3500, C/V Tradesman and ProMaster may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A replacement "festoon" or "fuse" style map light bulb is part number 578 which is available from various manufacturers such as Sylvania, GE, PIAA and Eiko.

You can also use a brighter 578 LED bulb.

The only tool needed to change the bulbs is a small flathead screwdriver used to pry open the translucent plastic lens cover.

Pull Out Old Bulb
To prevent from scratching the plastic surfaces, you may choose to cover the tip of your screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth.

Insert the blade of the small flathead screwdriver in to the notch located on the left edge of the lens cover.

Gently pry out the left side of the lens cover and swing it open towards the right.

If the old bulb was recently turned on, be careful when you remove it since it might still be hot enough to burn your fingers.

Grasp the old bulb with your thumb and forefinger before pulling it straight out of the socket.

Push a new festoon style # 578 bulb straight in to the socket.

Tip - If you are installing an LED bulb and it doesn't work at first, try flipping it around in the socket.

Make sure that the hook on the right side of the light housing is re-inserted above the headliner.
