This
automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist
owners of the fifth generation (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and probably
also the refreshed 2018 model year) Jeep Cherokee in checking or
changing a blown fuse or a faulty relay in either the engine bay or
interior passenger compartment electrical panels. Owners of other Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, Fiat and RAM vehicles such as the Compass, Renegade, Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Patriot, 500, Town & Country, 200, 300, Pacifica, Challenger, Charger, Dart, Durango, Journey, Grand Caravan, RAM 1500, C/V Tradesman and ProMaster Van may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. This Cherokee is equipped with standard mini blade fuses which can be purchased at any auto parts store, Walmart or online at Amazon. A white plastic fuse puller tool should be included on the engine bay fuse block. If not, you can use a pair of needle nose pliers with rubber insulated handles. |

Push In Rear Release Tab |
Pull Off Fuse Box Cover |
|
The first two steps
are to open the hood and then move to the right (driver) side of the
vehicle. The engine bay fuse box is located on the driver side of the engine bay just behind the 12V automotive battery and in front of the shock tower. Push in the tab on the front edge of the fuse box cover to release the retaining clip. Then push in the tab on the rear edge of the cover to release the 2nd retaining clip. Pull the cover straight off the top of the fuse box. |

Engine Bay Fuse Panel |
|
There is a fuse
location diagram on the underside of the cover and also another one in your
owner's manual. Locate the white plastic fuse puller tool near the front left corner of the engine bay fuse panel. |

Driver Side Dashboard |
|
Pull the tool
straight out of its socket. The interior passenger compartment fuse block is located behind the storage drawer on the lower left (driver) side of the dashboard. |
||
Open Storage Compartment |
Gently Pull Out Drawer |
|
Open the storage
compartment and gently separate the hinge at the bottom of the drawer. Pull the drawer out of the dashboard and set it aside in a safe place. |

Pull Out Old Fuse |
|
Pinch the end of
the fuse puller tool to open the jaws and then place them over the old fuse
you'd like to check or change. Pull the old fuse straight out of its socket. |
||
Old Fuse Removed |
Hold Up To Light Bulb |
|
To check the old
fuse, hold it up to a light source. If the thin metal bar or "strip" in the translucent plastic middle of the old fuse appears to be burnt or broken, the old fuse is most likely "blown" and should be replaced with a new fuse of the same amperage rating (e.g. 5A, 10A, 15A, 20A). This 2015 Cherokee is equipped with standard mini blade electrical fuses. The newer models might instead have the relatively newer "low profile" mini blade fuses. Please check your vehicle before buying new fuses. If the thin metal band in the center of the old fuse appears to be intact, the old fuse is most likely still good. Since new fuses are so inexpensive, it should still be replaced as part of your electrical problem troubleshooting process. |
||
Push In New Fuse |
Replace Fuse Puller Tool |
|
Push a new fuse of
the same amperage rating straight in to the socket. Replace the fuse puller tool in to its holder near the front left corner of the engine bay fuse block. If you suspect that a relay is faulty, the easiest way to verify the problem is by simply replacing it with a new one. (Or you can use a multimeter to check the old one.) |
||
Push On Fuse Box Cover |
Re-Attach Plastic Hinges |
|
Lower the fuse box
cover down in to place and push on it to secure the two retaining clips. Re-attach the plastic hinges on the bottom edge of the storage compartment. |
||
Pop In Top of Drawer |
Close Storage Compartment |
|
Gently push the top
edge of the storage drawer back in to the dashboard. Close the storage compartment. Check the electrical component that you were having issues with such as the radio, headlights, wipers, tail lights, horn, power windows, door locks, interior lights, A/C system, gauges, etc. If you are still having the same electrical problem, there might be a shorted out wire somewhere or the component itself needs to be replaced.
