This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the first
generation (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 & 2020) Infiniti QX60
luxury SUV in changing the motor oil and replacing the oil filter on the
VQ35DE 3.5 liter V6 engine. (The procedure should be similar for the 2.5L I4
engine in the hybrid models.) Owners of other Infiniti and Nissan vehicles such as the JX35, Q50, Q60, QX50, QX80, Pathfinder, Murano, Rogue, Armada, Kicks, Frontier, Titan, NV, NV200, 370Z, GT-R, Leaf, Maxima, Altima, Sentra and Versa might also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. A few compatible replacement oil filters with their part numbers are as follows: Bosch 3300, Mobil 1 M1-108, Fram XG6607, Wix 51358, K&N PS-1008, Purolator PL14612 and Royal Purple 10-2876. The tools and other items required to complete this procedure include a 14mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet, a used oil catch container and a flat head screwdriver. The oil capacity specification for the VQ35DE 3.5L V6 engine for an oil change with a filter replacement is 5 1/8 U.S. quarts (4.8L). The recommended oil viscosity is SAE 0W-20. Please double check your owner's manual for the oil capacity specification and viscosity recommendation. The first few steps are to drive the SUV on to a level surface, shift the transmission into "Park" and turn off the ignition. Be sure to engage the emergency / parking brake and place wheel chocks on both sides of the rear tires to help prevent the vehicle from moving. I always prefer to change the oil while the engine is still warm so that most of the contaminants are still suspended in the oil and the old oil will also drain out more quickly. Open the hood and locate the oil filler cap and the dipstick. |

Partially Remove Dipstick |
Jack Point Location |
Raise Front of SUV |
Twist off the oil
filler cap in the counterclockwise direction and lift out the dipstick an
inch or two. Partially pulling out the dipstick and removing the oil fill cap will help prevent a vacuum from forming and also allow the old oil to drain out more quickly. You might be able to access the oil drain bolt with out raising the vehicle, but I found it much easier to just lift up the front of the SUV. Raise the front passenger side of the vehicle with the floor jack and securely support it with at least two jack stands. Please do not solely rely on the floor jack to support the SUV. |

Passenger Side of Engine |
Black Metal Oil Pan |
Oil Pan Drain Bolt |
The black metal oil
pan is located closer to the passenger side of the vehicle and next to the
exhaust pipe. The black metal drain bolt is situated on the rear of the oil pan with the bolt head facing towards the back of the SUV. |
||
Used Oil Catch Basin |
Loosen Counterclockwise |
Drain Out Old Oil |
Slide the used oil
catch container to just below the oil drain bolt. Be careful when you remove the drain bolt. The old oil might still be hot enough to burn your fingers depending on how long you warmed up the engine. Carefully loosen the drain bolt in the counterclockwise direction with a 14mm socket and a 3/8" drive ratchet. Remove the drain bolt and allow the old oil to drain out for at least five to ten minutes or until the flow slows down to just an occasional drop. Inspect the washer or "gasket" on the drain bolt. If the washer is damaged or appears worn out, it should be replaced. The OEM oil drain bolt washer part number is Nissan 11026-JA00A. Wipe off any debris from the drain bolt and the area around the drain hole. Spin in the drain bolt a few turns by hand in the clockwise direction to help prevent it from becoming cross threaded. Tighten the drain bolt in the clockwise direction with the 14mm socket and a 3/8" drive ratchet until it is snug. If you have a torque wrench, the drain bolt should be tightened to the service manual specification of 22 to 29 lb-ft of torque. |

Replace Oil Drain Bolt |
Basin Under Oil Filter |
Turn Front Wheels |
Double check that
the oil drain bolt is tight before moving on to the next steps. The oil filter is located on the passenger side of the engine below the crankshaft pulley. For better access to the front passenger wheel well, carefully turn the steering wheel all the way to the right. |

Passenger Wheel Well |
Pry Out Center of Fastener |
2nd Pop Rivet |
Locate the black
plastic cover on the passenger side of the engine, which is known as the
"splash shield" or "splash guard". There are four plastic fasteners holding the plastic cover in place. If you want to take a shortcut, you could just remove the two lower pop rivets and lift up the panel to access the oil filter. Pry out the smaller round button in the center of the fasteners with a flat head screwdriver to unlock them. |
||
3rd Pop Rivet |
4th Pop Rivet |
Splash Shield Removed |
Then pry out the
base of the fasteners. Pull off the plastic splash guard and set it aside. Set the four pop rivets aside in a safe place. |

Oil Filter Location |
Oil Filter Wrench |
Once the splash
shield has been removed, you'll be able to see the old oil filter in front
of the drive shaft and below the serpentine belt on the crankshaft pulley. I highly recommend getting a Lisle 63600 oil filter wrench. It has made it much easier for me to remove stubborn stuck on oil filters that have been over tightened at the factory or at quick lube oil change stations. |
||
Loosen Counterclockwise |
Drain Out Oil - Old Filter |
Dip Finger In New Oil |
Twist off the old
oil filter in the counterclockwise direction. Allow the old oil to drain out from the filter and the receptacle for at least a few minutes. |
||
Lubricate Filter Gasket |
Spin On New Oil Filter |
Line Up Splash Guard |
Dip your finger
into some new oil and lubricate the rubber o-ring gasket on the new oil
filter. Lubricating the o-ring gasket on the new oil filter will help it to form a better seal, prevent oil leaks and also make it easier to remove during the next oil change. Make sure the o-ring gasket from the old oil filter is not still attached to the engine. Spin on the new oil filter in the clockwise direction until it is snug or about 1/4 to 1/3 of a turn past finger tight. (The owner's manual specification for tightening the oil filter is 11-15 lb-ft of torque.) Try to avoid over tightening the oil filter to prevent from damaging the rubber o-ring which could result in an oil leak. Line up the splash shield and re-insert the four plastic pop rivet fasteners. |
||
Re-Insert Pop Rivets |
Secure Four Fasteners |
|
Pop in the buttons
in the center of the fasteners to lock them into place. Double check that the engine cover is securely attached. If you raised the SUV, carefully lower it from the jack stands by using the floor jack. |
||
Insert Automotive Funnel |
Pour In New Oil |
Check Dipstick Level |
Insert the automotive funnel into the oil fill hole. It is much better to have slightly less oil than necessary in an engine than to run an engine that has been over filled. Running an engine that has been over filled with oil may cause damage to seals, gaskets and/or other components. I recommend at first only pouring in about 4.5 to 4.75 U.S. quart. The engine's total capacity for an oil change with a new oil filter is 5 1/8 U.S. quarts (4.8L). Slowly pour in the new SAE 0W-20 oil into the funnel. Temporarily replace the oil filler cap and tighten it in the clockwise direction. Push the dipstick back into place. Start the engine and allow it to warm up to operating temperature. Turn off the ignition and allow the new oil to drain back down to the pan for at least 10 minutes. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, fully re-insert it and pull it back out again to check the oil level. If necessary, slowly pour in more oil and repeatedly check the level on the dipstick until it reaches the line at the top of the cross-hatched area below the "H" which indicates the maximum or full line. You may not need to pour in the entire 5 1/8 U.S. quarts of new oil to reach the "H" mark on the dipstick. |
||
Replace Dipstick |
Tighten Oil Fill Cap |
Oil Change Complete |
Make sure the oil
fill cap is tight and the dipstick is fully re-inserted. Be sure to record the oil change in your SUV's service records. The owner's manual service interval specification for changing the oil and filter is either every 5,000 miles for earlier model years or every 7,500 miles for later model years. Please check your owner's manual for your vehicle's oil change interval. It would also be a good idea to check your parking spot, driveway or garage for drops of fresh oil over the next few days which might indicate an oil leak from the new oil filter or the drain bolt.
