Honda Odyssey 3rd Brake Light Bulb Replacement Guide
How to change a burnt out high mount third brake light bulb on a 3rd generation 2005-2010 Honda Odyssey minivan.

This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the third generation (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 & 2010) Honda Odyssey minivan in changing a burnt out high mount third brake light bulb located in a housing attached to the top of the tailgate.

Owners of other Honda or Acura vehicles such as the Accord, Civic, Crosstour, CR-V, CR-Z, HR-V, Fit, Element, Insight, Pilot, Ridgeline, Clarity, Crosstour, Elysion, ILX, TSX, TLX, TL, RLX, RDX, NSX and MDX may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The compatible replacement miniature wedge base light bulb part number is 921 (also known as W16W).

If you would like to have a brighter 3rd brake light, you can install a compatible 921 LED bulb.

The tools needed to access and replace the light bulb is a small flathead screwdriver and a Phillips head screwdriver.

Pry Out 2nd Screw Cover

Loosen Counterclockwise
Use a small flathead screwdriver or a plastic trim panel removal tool to pry out the small triangular shaped plastic screw covers located on the left and right side of the light housing.

Set the two screw covers aside in a safe place.

Remove the two screws by turning them counterclockwise with a Phillips head screwdriver.

Pull Out Light Housing
Set the two screws aside in a safe place.

Gently pull the light housing straight off the tailgate.

1/4 Turn Counterclockwise

Bulb Socket Removed

Pull Out Old Light Bulb
Turn over the brake light housing to access the bulb socket.

Rotate the base of the bulb socket 1/4 turn counterclockwise before pulling it straight out of the housing.

Set the housing aside in a safe place.

Pull the old light bulb straight out of the socket.

Re-Insert Bulb Socket

1/4 Turn Clockwise - Lock
Push a new number 921 light bulb straight into the socket.

If you would like to have a brighter 3rd brake light, install a compatible 921 LED bulb.

Re-insert the bulb socket into the housing and rotate it 1/4 turn clockwise to secure it in place.

Replace Screws

Tighten Clockwise
Carefully push the brake light housing back into place on the tailgate door.

Replace the two screws by turning them clockwise with the Phillips head screwdriver until they are snug.

Try to avoid over tightening the screws to prevent from cracking the plastic housing.

Test New Brake Light Bulb
Push the two red plastic screw covers back into place on the left and right sides of the housing.

To test the new light bulb, have an assistant sit in the front seat and push down on the brake pedal.
