How to change the battery in the key fob remote control for a new "Type 312" 2008 to 2015 Fiat 500 with pictures.

This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the "new" Type 312 (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015) Fiat 500 compact car in changing a dead battery in the combination key fob remote control and ignition key assembly for the keyless entry system.

Owners of other Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and RAM vehicles such as the 4C, Giulia, 200, 300, Town & Country, Challenger, Charger, Dart, Durango, Journey, Grand Caravan, Compass, Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Renegade, Cherokee, Patriot, 1500, C/V Tradesman and ProMaster may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A replacement coin cell (A.K.A. "button" or "watch") battery is part number CR2032 which is available from various manufacturers such as Panasonic, Sony, GE, Maxell, Energizer and Duracell.

The only tool needed to access and replace the key fob battery is a small flathead screwdriver.

Rotate Clockwise To Unlock

Gently Pull Out Battery Tray
The first step is press the red "Fiat" button on the front of the key fob to release the flip out metal ignition key.

Locate the small round silver metal switch with images of an unlocked padlock and a locked padlock next to it.

Use a small flathead screwdriver to rotate the switch from the locked to the unlocked position by rotating it a quarter turn in the clockwise direction.

Then gently pry out the edge of battery holder near the switch from the fob assembly.

Carefully remove the battery tray.

Notice that the "+" side of the coin cell battery faces down towards the rear cover of the key fob.

Gently slide the old battery out of the socket.

Line Up Battery Holder

Push Tray In To Slot
Push a new # CR2032 3 volt battery in to the socket with the "+" positive side corresponding with the "+" symbol on the holder.

Line up the battery holder and the opening in the key fob with the "+" side facing towards the rear of the fob and the "-" negative side facing towards the rubber buttons.

Push the battery holder in to the slot until it is fully seated inside the fob.

Turn Switch To "Locked"

Test New Key Fob Battery
Rotate the switch to the "Locked" position by rotating it a 1/4 turn with the small flathead screwdriver.

To test the new key fob battery, stand near your Fiat 500 and press the "Unlock" or "Lock" buttons.

If the new battery is working properly, you should see the parking lights flash and hear the door locks opening or closing.
