This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the first generation (2017, 2018, 2019 and probably also the 2020 and 2021 model years) Chrysler Pacifica minivan in changing a burnt out combination dual filament brake and rear turn signal light bulb or the reverse (back-up) bulb in the tail light housings. Owners of other FCA (Fiat Chrysler America) vehicles from Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, RAM or Fiat such as the Town & Country, 300, 200, Charger, Challenger, Durango, Journey, Grand Caravan, Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Compass, Renegade, Patriot, RAM 1500, RAM ProMaster City, Fiat 500 and Fiat 124 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The compatible replacement light bulb part numbers are as follows: Brake & Rear Turn Signal # 7443 (or W21/5W) and Reverse # 7440 (also known as number W21W). The only tool needed to remove the tail light housing and access the bulb sockets is a Torx T30 star bit screwdriver. |

Remove Bottom Screw |
Two Bolts Removed |
Pull Off Tail Light Housing |
The first two steps
are to open the rear tailgate and then move to the side of the vehicle with
the burnt out tail light bulb. The combination rear turn signal and brake light bulb is located inside the outer tail light housing attached to the rear corner of the minivan. Remove the two screws located on the inner edge of the tail light housing (near the cargo area) by turning them in the counterclockwise direction with a Torx T-30 star bit screwdriver. Set the two screws aside in a safe place. The tail light housing is still held in place by a metal peg on the back side that acts as a friction fastener inserted into a slot on the rear of the vehicle. Gently pull the tail light housing straight off the rear corner of the minivan. You may need to wiggle the housing or use a plastic pry bar tool to pry along the outer edge to loosen the peg. |
||
Turn Over Access Sockets |
Brake / Turn Signal Socket |
1/4 Turn Counterclockwise |
Place a towel on
the bumper to protect the paint and also the clear plastic lens cover on the
tail light housing from being scratched. Turn over the housing to access the bulb socket. Rotate the bulb socket 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction before pulling it straight out of the housing. |
||
Remove Bulb Socket |
Pull Out Old Light Bulb |
1/4 Turn Clockwise - Lock |
Pull the old
combination dual filament brake and rear turn signal light bulb straight out
of the socket. Push a new number 7443 (also known as part # W21/5W) light bulb straight into the socket. If you would like to have brighter brake and rear turn signal lights, there are compatible 7443 LED bulbs available. Re-insert the socket into the housing and rotate it 1/4 turn in the clockwise direction to secure it into place. |
||
Line Up Peg & Slot |
Slide On Tail Light Housing |
Replace Upper Screw |
Line up the metal
peg on the back side of the tail light housing with its corresponding
plastic slot on the rear corner of the minivan. Slide the tail light housing back into place. You should hear or feel the peg "snap" back into the grommet. |

||
Replace Lower Screw |
Tail Light Assembly Secured |
Inner Housing - Reverse |
Replace the two
screws on the inner edge of the tail light housing by turning them in the
clockwise direction with the Torx T-30 screwdriver. Try to avoid over tightening the screws to prevent from cracking the plastic inner edge of the housing. The reverse light bulb is located in a separate housing attached to the tailgate door. |
||
Cargo Light - Access Panel |
Pry Out Access Cover |
Access Cover Removed |
Locate the cargo
area light and the access cover on the underside of the tailgate door
plastic interior panel. Use a small flathead screwdriver to gently pry out the access cover. (The cargo area light is an LED bulb that should last the life time of the vehicle.) |
||
Reverse Bulb Socket |
1/4 Turn Counterclockwise |
Remove Bulb Socket |
Rotate the reverse light bulb socket 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction before pulling it straight out of the housing. | ||
Pull Out Old Light Bulb |
Push In New Reverse Bulb |
1/4 Turn Clockwise - Lock |
Pull the old
reverse light bulb straight out of the socket. Push in a new number 7440 (also known as part number W21W) bulb straight into the socket. If you would like to have brighter reverse lights, install some compatible 7440 LED bulbs. Re-insert the bulb socket into the housing and rotate it 1/4 turn in the clockwise direction to secure it into place. |
||
Line Up Access Cover |
Snap In Retaining Clips |
Test New Tail Light Bulbs |
Line up the
retaining clips on the back side of the access cover and gently pop it back
into place. To test the new tail light bulbs, have an assistant step on the brake pedal, activate the hazard signals and place the transmission in reverse. For more,
