This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the twelfth generation 2019 (hatchback), 2020, 2021, 2022 (and probably also the 2023, 2024 & 2025) Toyota Corolla sedan in changing a burnt out vanity mirror light bulb located in the housing attached to the headliner above the sun visor.

Owners of other Toyota and Lexus vehicles such as the Camry, C-HR, Venza, Avalon, 86, Sienna, Tacoma, RAV4, Highlander, 4Runner, Sequoia, IS 350, RX 350, UX 200, GS 350, IS 300 and ES 350 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) light bulb was marked as part number U91 12V8W (12 volts, 8 watts).

The compatible replacement aftermarket miniature wedge base light bulbs include part number 2825 (W5W - 5 watts), 168 (4.9 watts) and 194 (3.8 watts).

If you'd like to have brighter vanity lights that will also last much longer before burning out like the traditional incandescent bulbs, install some 2825 LED units.

The only tool needed to access and replace the bulbs is a small plastic pry bar tool.

The steps to replace either the driver side or passenger side light bulb are the same.

Gently insert the blade of the plastic pry bar tool in between the fabric headliner and the outer edge of the light housing (closer to the door and outside of the vehicle).

Pull Out Old Light Bulb
Gently push the pry bar tool in to release the flexible plastic retaining clip on the outer edge of the housing.

Pull the housing down out of the opening in the headliner.

If the old light bulb was recently turned on, be careful since it might still be hot enough to burn your fingers.

Pull the old light bulb straight out of the socket.

The old OEM (original equipment manufacturer) miniature wedge base light bulb was marked as part number "U91 12V8W" (12 volts 8 watts).

I couldn't find an 8 watt miniature wedge base light bulb but the closest replacement is the 2825 (also known as the W5W) which is 12 volts and 5 watts.

I recommend upgrading to a brighter 2825 LED unit that uses less power and will probably last longer than the life time of the vehicle with out burning out.

To remove the driver side light housing, the procedure is the same. Push in the retaining clip on the outer edge of the housing with the plastic pry bar tool before pulling it down out of the headliner.

Insert Wires First
Push the new light bulb straight into the socket.

I recommend testing the new light bulb before you re-install the light housing.

To test the new bulb, slide open the mirror cover. If the light doesn't turn on, try pressing the "Unlock" button on the key fob to re-activate the interior lights.

Tip - If you installed an LED bulb and it doesn't work, try removing it from the socket, rotate it 180 degrees and then push it back into the socket. Some LED bulbs are "polarized" and will only work when the "+" positive and "-" negative electrical contacts are in the correct orientation.

First, re-insert the wires and the inner edge of the light housing (closer to the rearview mirror).

Flip Up Sun Visor

Then gently snap in the flexible plastic retaining clip on the outer edge of the light housing.

Make sure that every edge of the light housing is flush with the fabric headliner.

To double check that the new bulb still works, slide open the vanity mirror cover and then close it.

Flip the sun visor back up towards the headliner to finish the procedure.

Don't forget to write down the bulb change in your car's service records.
