This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the fifth
generation (2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and the revised 2023 model year) Toyota
RAV4 SUV in changing a burnt out vanity mirror light bulb located in the
housing attached to the headliner above the sun visor. Owners of other Toyota and Lexus vehicles such as the Camry, Corolla, Highlander, Prius, Avalon, C-HR, GR86, Venza, Sienna, Sequoia, 4Runner, IS 250, IS 300, IS 350, ES 350, GS 350 and GX 460 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The OEM light bulbs were marked as part number Toshiba 12V8W P87. If you have trouble finding the 12V8W bulbs, you can also use any other miniature wedge base light bulb such as the 2825 or the W5W (5 watts). The best option would be to upgrade the bulb to a 2825 LED unit which will be much brighter and last for a very long time before burning out like the traditional incandescent bulb. The only tool needed to access and replace the bulb is a small plastic pry bar tool or a flat head screwdriver. If you choose to use a screwdriver, I recommend covering the tip of your screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth to help prevent from scratching the plastic surfaces. Insert the blade of the plastic pry bar tool or screwdriver in between the side edge of the lens cover and the fabric headliner. Very gently pry off the lens cover to release the retaining clips. |

Try to avoid using

The lens cover should pop off relatively easily. |

Pull Out Old Light Bulb |
|
If the old light
bulb was recently turned on, it might still be hot enough to burn your
fingers. Allow the old light bulb to cool off before handling it. Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket. |

Push In New Light Bulb |
The OEM (original
equipment manufacturer) light bulb in this 2019 RAV4 was a Toshiba 12V8W P8Y
(8 watts). If you'd like to buy the same bulb, you'll have to visit the parts counter at a Toyota dealership. I recommend just buying a 2825 bulb (5 watts) at any auto parts store or online at Amazon. If you'd like to have brighter vanity mirror lights, install some compatible replacement 2825 LED units. To test the new light bulb, slide open the mirror cover. Tip - If you installed an LED bulb and it doesn't work, try removing it from the socket, rotate it 180 degrees and push it back into the socket. Some LED bulbs are "polarized" and will only work when the "+" positive and "-" negative electrical contacts are in the correct orientation. |

Line Up Lens Cover |
Side Tab & Slot |
|
Line up the lens
cover with the opening in the light housing. You'll notice that one retaining clip is smaller than the other side. On the passenger side, the left side clip is smaller and the outer edge clip is larger. If you have trouble pushing the lens cover back into place, rotate the lens cover 180 degrees. |

Testing New Vanity Bulb |
Gently snap the
lens cover back into place. You should hear or feel it "pop" it into the
housing. To test the new vanity light bulb, slide open the mirror cover. Be sure to write down the bulb change in your vehicle's service records. For more, please check out all of my
