This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the "JL"
fourth generation (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 & 2023) Jeep Wrangler
SUV in changing a burnt out brake / rear turn signal bulb or the reverse
(backup) bulb in the tail light housings. Owners of other Jeep, Dodge and RAM vehicles such as the Grand Cherokee, Compass, Renegade, Gladiator, Cherokee, Grand Wagoneer, Wagoneer, Charger, Challenger, Durango, RAM 1500, Promaster, 2500 and 3500 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The compatible replacement light bulb part numbers are as follows: Brake / Rear Turn Signal combination 3157K and Reverse # W21W (also known as 7440). If you'd like to have brighter tail lights, install some 3157K LED and W21W LED units. The only tool needed to access and replace the tail light bulbs is a Torx T30 star bit screwdriver. The first few steps are to open the tailgate door for the cargo area and raise the back windshield window. |

Move To Side of Cargo |
Pry Out Access Cover |
Access Cover Removed |
Move to the side of the cargo area and located the small plastic access cover for the tail light housing fastener. Insert the blade of a flat head screwdriver into the notch on the inner edge of the access cover. Gently pry open the access cover and set it aside in a safe place. |
||
White Plastic Fastener |
Torx T30 Star Bit Screw |
Loosen Counterclockwise |
Use a
Torx T-30 star bit screwdriver to
loosen the white plastic fastener in the counterclockwise direction. The white plastic screw is spring loaded, so you may need to push down while rotating it in the counterclockwise direction. |
||
Plastic Screw Removed |
Access Cap & Fastener |
Pull Off Tail Light Housing |
Set the white
plastic screw aside in a safe place along with the access cap. Carefully pull the tail light housing off the rear corner of the vehicle. |
||
Turn Over Housing |
Slide Out Red Lock Tab |
Push Down Release Tab |
Turn over the
housing to access the back side. Slide out the red locking tab on the electrical connector to unlock it. Push down the release tab and slide the power plug straight out of its socket. |
||
Towel - Protect Paint |
Disconnect Power Plug |
Loosen Counterclockwise |
Place a towel below
the tail light housing to protect the lens or the painted bumper from being
scratched. The black plastic mounting bracket attached to the rear of the tail light housing is held in place by three Phillips head screws. |
||
Remove 3 Phillips Screws |
3 Phillips Head Screws |
Two Sockets Exposed |
Remove the three
Phillips head screws by turning them in the counterclockwise direction. Set the three screws aside in a safe place. Pull the black plastic mounting bracket off the rear of the tail light housing. |
||
1/4 Turn Counterclockwise |
Brake Light Bulb Socket |
Pull Out Old Light Bulb |
The bulb socket
located closer to the top of the tail light housing contains the brake and
rear turn signal dual filament combination bulb. Rotate the bulb socket 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction before pulling it straight out of the assembly. Warning: If the old light bulb was recently turned on, it might still be hot enough to burn your fingers. Carefully pull the old bulb straight out of the socket. |
||
OEM 3157K Brake Bulb |
Push In New Light Bulb |
1/4 Turn Clockwise - Lock |
Push a new number
3157K light bulb straight into
the socket. Clean off the new bulb with a paper towel and some rubbing alcohol. If there is any oil or grease on the new bulb, it might cause a hot spot and result in the bulb burning out prematurely. If you'd like to have brighter brake / rear turn signal light bulbs, install some 3157K LED units. Reinsert the bulb socket into the housing and rotate it 1/4 turn in the clockwise direction to secure it into place. |
||
Remove Reverse Socket |
Pull Out Old Light Bulb |
OEM Reverse W21W |
The reverse light
bulb socket is located near the bottom of the tail light housing. Rotate the bulb socket 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction before pulling it straight out of the housing. Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket. |
||
Push In New Light Bulb |
1/4 Turn Clockwise - Lock |
Reattach Bracket |
The OEM (original
equipment manufacturer) reverse light bulb in this 2020 Wrangler was marked
as part number W16W, which is also known as 7440.
Push a new W21W bulb straight into the socket. Clean off the new bulb with a paper towel and some rubbing alcohol to remove any grease, oil or dirt. If you'd like to have brighter reverse light bulbs, install some W21W LED units. Reinsert the bulb socket into the housing and rotate it 1/4 turn in the clockwise direction. Line up the black plastic mounting bracket and lower it down into place over the back side of the housing. |
||
Replace Three Screws |
Push In Power Plug |
Slide In Red Locking Tab |
Replace the three
screws and tighten them in the clockwise direction with the Phillips head
screwdriver. Slide the electrical connector straight into its socket. You should feel or hear the power plug "click" securely into place. Slide the red lock tab in towards the socket to secure the connector in place. |
||
Line Up Light Housing |
Slide Housing In Place |
Reinsert Plastic Screw |
Line up the light
housing with the opening in the rear corner of the vehicle. Push the tail light housing back into place. Reinsert the white plastic screw into the opening in the cargo area trim panel. |
||
Tighten T-30 Clockwise |
Pop In Access Cover |
Test New Light Bulbs |
Tighten the spring
loaded fastener in the clockwise direction with the Torx T-30 screwdriver
until it is snug. Snap the access cover back into place. The small notch should be closer to the center line of the vehicle. To test the new light bulbs, have an assistant step on the brake pedal, activate the hazard signals and shift the transmission into reverse. Note - If you installed LED bulbs and they don't work, try removing them from the socket, rotate them 180 degrees and push them back into the socket. Some LED bulbs are "polarized" and will only work when the "+" positive and "-" negative electrical contacts are in the correct orientation. If the new bulbs flash quickly (hyper flash), I'd recommend exchanging them for "error free" bulbs or "anti hyper flash" bulbs with built in resistors. Be sure to record the bulb change in your vehicle's service records. For more,
