Engine Oil Change Guide
How to change the oil and replace the
filter in a 2018 to 2023 Jeep Wrangler with the turbo 2.0L I4 engine.

This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the "JL"
fourth generation (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 & 2023) Jeep Wrangler
SUV in changing the motor oil and replacing the oil filter on the GME
Hurricane 2.0 liter turbocharged inline four cylinder engine. Owners of other Jeep, Dodge and RAM vehicles such as the Grand Cherokee, Compass, Renegade, Gladiator, Cherokee, Grand Wagoneer, Wagoneer, Charger, Challenger, Durango, RAM 1500, Promaster, 2500 and 3500 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The tools and other items needed to complete this procedure include a used oil catch basin, a 13mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet, a Lisle 63600 oil filter wrench (optional) and an automotive funnel. The recommended oil viscosity for this 2020 Wrangler is SAE 5W-30. According to the owner's manual, the total oil capacity of the Hurricane 2.0L turbo I4 engine for an oil change with a filter replacement is 5 U.S. quarts (or 4.73 Liters). A few compatible replacement oil filters with their part numbers are as follows: Fram XG10060, Wix 57060XP, K&N HP-1017, Mopar 4892339AA, Purolator PL12222 and Mobil 1 M1-113. It would be best to perform the oil change on a warm engine after a short drive. Warming up the engine will help suspend any contaminants within the old oil and also allow it to drain out more quickly. The next few steps are to park the vehicle on a level surface, shift the transmission into "P" (Park) and engage the emergency / parking brake. Place wheel chocks on both sides of the front tires to help prevent the car from moving. Then open the hood, twist off the oil fill cap in the counterclockwise direction and partially remove the dipstick an inch or two to help prevent a vacuum from forming when you drain out the old oil. |

Slide under the
vehicle and locate the black metal oil pan. The oil filter is located on the side of the oil pan and the drain bolt is located on the rear edge of the pan. |

Slide the used oil
catch basin to just below the drain bolt. Loosen the oil drain bolt in the counterclockwise direction with a 13mm socket and a 3/8" drive ratchet. Be careful when you remove the drain bolt. The old oil might still be hot enough to burn your skin. |

Spin out the oil
drain bolt the last few turns by hand. Allow the old oil to drain out for at least five to ten minutes or until the flow slows down to just an occasional drip. Inspect the washer on the oil drain bolt and replace it if necessary. Spin in the oil drain bolt a few turns by hand in the clockwise direction to help prevent it from becoming cross threaded. |

Tighten the oil
drain bolt in the clockwise direction with the 13mm socket and a 3/8" drive
ratchet until it is snug. If you have a torque wrench, the service manual lists a torque specification of 20 lb-ft (or 27 N*m) for the oil drain bolt on the GME Hurricane 2.0L turbocharged I4 engine. Carefully slide the used oil catch container to just below the old oil filter. Spin off the old oil filter in the counterclockwise direction. The filter on this Wrangler was on way too tight. If the old filter was over tightened at the dealership or a quick oil change shop, I highly recommend using a Lisle 63600 oil filter wrench. It makes removing over tightened and stubborn oil filters extremely easy. |

Allow the old oil
to drain out from the filter receptacle for at least a few minutes. Dip your finger into some new oil and lubricate the rubber o-ring gasket on the new filter. Lubricating the o-ring gasket on the new filter will help it form a better seal, prevent oil leaks and also make it easier to remove during the next oil change. |

Make sure the
o-ring from the old oil filter is not still attached to the engine. Spin on the new oil filter in the clockwise direction until it is snug. Or about 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn past finger tight. Try to avoid over tightening the new filter to prevent from damaging the o-ring gasket which could result in an oil leak. Double check that the oil drain bolt and the new oil filter are tight before moving on to the next steps. Insert the automotive funnel into the oil fill hole. |

The total oil
capacity of the GME Hurricane 2.0L turbocharged I4 engine for an oil change
with a filter replacement is 5.0 U.S. quarts (or 4.73 Liters). (According to the owner's manual, this is the same oil capacity as the Pentastar 3.6L V6 engine.) I recommend at first only pouring in about 4.5 U.S. quarts of the engine's 5.0 quart total capacity. Then replace the oil fill cap, push down the dipstick, run the engine for a few minutes, turn it off and allow the new oil to drain back down to the pan for at least 10 to 15 minutes. |

Pull out the
dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it and pull it out again to check the oil
level. If necessary, slowly pour in the last 1/2 quart of oil and repeatedly check the oil level on the dipstick until it reaches just at or below the upper dimple at the top of the cross hatched area of the dipstick. You might not need to pour in the entire 5 U.S. quarts in order for the level to reach the "Full" line on the dipstick depending on how long you allowed the old oil to drain out, how warm the engine was before you started the oil change and the ambient air temperature. The lower dimple represents the "Low" or "Minimum" line and the upper dimple indicates the "Max" (maximum) level. Once the oil level is correct, replace the dipstick and make sure the oil fill cap is tight. Be sure to write down the oil change in your vehicle's service records. It would also be a good idea to check your driveway, garage or parking spot for drops of fresh oil during the next few days which might indicate a leak from the drain bolt or the new filter. To reset the engine oil change indicator system (or "oil life meter"), follow these steps: 1. Without pushing down on the brake pedal, place the ignition into the "On/Run" mode but do not start the engine. 2. Navigate to the "Oil Life" option in the "Vehicle Info" menu on the instrument cluster display. 3. Push and hold the "OK" button until the oil life gauge resets to 100%. Some Wrangler models may need to have the oil life meter reset with the alternate method as follows: 1. Without pushing down on the brake pedal, place the ignition into the "On/Run" mode but do not start the engine. 2. Full press down the accelerator (gas) pedal slowly three times within ten seconds. 3. Without pushing down on the brake pedal, turn the ignition "Off".
