Jeep Compass
Tail Light Bulbs Replacement Guide
How to change a burnt out brake, rear
turn signal or side marker light bulb in a 2017 to 2022 Jeep Compass.
2019 Jeep Compass |

This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second
generation (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and the updated 2022 model year) Jeep Compass
SUV in changing a burnt out brake, rear turn signal or side marker bulb in
the tail light housings. Owners of other Jeep, Dodge and RAM vehicles such as the Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Renegade, Gladiator, Cherokee, Grand Wagoneer, Wagoneer, Charger, Challenger, Durango, RAM 1500, Promaster, 2500 and 3500 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The compatible replacement part numbers are as follows: Brake & Turn Signal # W21/5W (also known as 7443) and Side Marker # 194. If you'd like to have brighter tail lights that will also last much longer before burning out like the traditional incandescent light bulbs, install some W21/5W LED and 194 LED units. Note - Please verify the part numbers on your old light bulbs and in your owner's manual before purchasing new ones. The tools needed to remove the tail light housing and replace the light bulbs include a flat head screwdriver, a Torx T30 star bit screwdriver and possibly also a plastic pry bar tool to loosen the friction fasteners. The first two steps are to open the tailgate door for the cargo area and move to the side of the vehicle with the burnt out tail light bulb. Use the flat head screwdriver to pry open the black plastic screw covers on the inner edge of the tail light assembly. |

Release 2nd Screw Cover |
Loosen Counterclockwise |
Remove Second Fastener |
Loosen the two
bolts by turning them in the counterclockwise direction with the Torx T-30
star bit screwdriver. Set the two bolts aside in a safe place. |

Two Bolts Removed |
Pull Off Tail Light Housing |
Two Metal Pegs Released |
The tail light
housing is still held in place by two black metal pegs or "spikes" inserted
into plastic grommets. Carefully pull the tail light housing straight off the rear corner of the SUV. If you have trouble detaching the tail light housing, try gently wiggling it back and forth while pulling straight back. Another option is to use a plastic pry bar tool inserted in between the front outer edge of the tail light housing and the metal body panel. If you use a plastic pry bar tool, please be gentle and avoid using excessive force to prevent from cracking the plastic lens cover. It would also be a good idea to only pry on the tail light housing on a warm day or in a heated garage. Cold plastic is much more brittle and prone to breaking than warm plastic. Once you have the tail light housing off the vehicle, you'll be able to see the two black metal pegs and the black plastic grommets. |

Disconnect Power Plug |
Tail Light Assembly |
1/4 Turn Counterclockwise |
An optional step is
to disconnect the electrical connector and fully separate the tail light
housing from the vehicle. Push in the release tab on the black plastic power plug and slide it straight out of its socket. Set the tail light assembly on a soft surface such as a towel or the rubber cargo area mat to help prevent from scratching the lens cover. The large bulb socket contains the combination brake / rear turn signal light bulb. Rotate the bulb socket 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction before pulling it straight out of the housing. Warning - If the old light bulb was recently turned on, it might still be hot enough to burn your fingers. Allow it to cool off before handling it. |
||
Pull Out Old Light Bulb |
Old Light Bulb Removed |
OEM Part Number |
Pull the old light
bulb straight out of the socket. If you have trouble removing the old light bulb due to corrosion (rust), sand or other debris, put on some protective gloves and try gently wiggling it back and forth while pulling it straight out. The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) dual filament brake / rear turn signal light bulb in this 2019 Jeep Compass Trailhawk 4X4 was a Toshiba W21/5W. |
||
Push In New Light Bulb |
1/4 Turn Clockwise |
Side Marker Bulb Socket |
Push a new number
W21/5W (or 7443) light bulb
straight into the socket. Clean off the new bulb with a paper towel and some rubbing alcohol. If there is any oil or grease left on the new bulb, it may create a hot spot and cause the bulb to burn out prematurely. If you'd like to have brighter brake and rear turn signal lights, install some compatible replacement W21/5W LED units. Tip - Some LED bulbs are "polarized" and will only work properly when the "+" positive and "-" negative electrical contacts are in the correct orientation. Reinsert the bulb socket into the housing and rotate it 1/4 turn in the clockwise direction to secure it into place. The small side marker bulb socket is located near the outer edge of the tail light housing. Rotate the bulb socket 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction before pulling it straight out. |
||
1/4 Turn Counterclockwise |
Pull Out Old Light Bulb |
OEM Part # 194 |
Pull the old light
bulb straight out of the socket. The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) light bulb part number is 194. Push a new number 194 light bulb straight into the socket. Clean off the new incandescent bulb with a paper towel and some rubbing alcohol. (If necessary, you could also use any other miniature wedge base light bulb such as the W5W, 2825, 168 or 158.) If you'd like to have brighter side marker lights, install some 194 LED units. |
||
Push In New Light Bulb |
1/4 Turn Clockwise |
Push In Connector |
Reinsert the bulb
socket into the tail light housing and rotate it 1/4 turn in the clockwise
direction. Hold the tail light housing near the vehicle and push the electrical connector back into its socket. You should feel or hear the power plug "click" securely into place. |
||
Line Up Spikes & Holes |
Push On Tail Light Housing |
Attach Bolt With Tape |
Line up the two
black metal pegs on the back side of the housing with the black plastic
grommets on the rear corner of the SUV. Push the tail light housing back into place. I chose to loosely attach the black metal bolts to my Torx T30 screwdriver with some painter's tape to keep them lined up properly. |
||
Tighten Top Bolt |
Turn Clockwise |
Push In Screw Caps |
Tighten the two
bolts in the clockwise direction until they are snug. Try to avoid over tightening the bolts to prevent from cracking the plastic inner edge of the tail light housing. Raise the two plastic screw caps and push them back into place. The screw covers should "click" securely in place. |
||
Test Brake / Turn Signal |
Test Side Maker Bulb |
Close Tailgate - Done! |
To test the new
light bulbs, turn on the parking lights, hazard lights and have an assistant
step on the brake pedal. (Note - The reverse light bulb is contained in the separate inner tail light housing. The procedure for changing those bulbs can be seen on the list of tutorials at the link below.) Be sure to write down the bulb change in your vehicle's service records. Tip - If you installed LED bulbs and they don't work, try removing them from their sockets, rotate them 180 degrees and push them back into the socket. Some LED bulbs are polarized and will only turn on when the "+" positive and "-" negative electrical contacts are in the correct orientation. Please
