This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second
generation (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and revised 2022) Jeep Compass
SUV in changing a burnt out fog light bulb located in the housing near the
bottom of the front bumper cover below the front turn signal light, DRL and
headlight assemblies. Owners of other Jeep, Dodge and RAM vehicles such as the Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Renegade, Gladiator, Cherokee, Grand Wagoneer, Wagoneer, Charger, Challenger, Durango, RAM 1500, Promaster, 2500 and 3500 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The compatible replacement halogen fog light bulb part number is H11. If you'd like to have brighter fog lights, install some H11 LED units. The tools needed to complete this procedure include an 8mm socket, a 10mm socket, a 1/4" drive ratchet and either a flat head screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool. The first step is to turn the steering wheel all the way in the opposite direction of the burnt out light bulb. Turning the front wheels will help create more room to work in the wheel well in front of the tire. |

Wheel Well Liner |
Loosen Counterclockwise |
Use 8mm Socket |
Locate the four
black metal screws along the outer edge of the wheel well liner in front of
the tire. Remove the four screws by turning them in the counterclockwise direction with the 8mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet. |
||
Remove 3rd Screw |
Remove 4th Screw |
Nut - Top of Wheel Well |
Set the four screws
aside in a safe place. Locate the black metal nut at the top of the wheel well just above the tire and near the suspension spring. |
||
Loosen Counterclockwise |
10mm Nut Removed |
4 Screws, 10mm Nut |
Loosen the nut by
turning it in the counterclockwise direction with the 10mm socket and a 1/4"
drive ratchet. Set the nut aside with the four screws. |
||
Pry Out Splash Shield |
Access To Bulb Sockets |
Fog Light - Bottom |
Use a large flat
head screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool to open the black plastic wheel
well liner. Firmly pull back the splash guard to access the rear of the fog light bulb housing. (Note - This is also the easiest way to change the front turn signal light bulb and DRL [daytime running lamp] light bulb.) |
||
Old Fog Light Bulb |
Pry Back Retaining Clips |
Two Retaining Clips |
Locate the base of
the old fog light bulb near the bottom of the front bumper cover. Gently pry back the retaining clips on the sides of the electrical connector before sliding it straight off the base of the old light bulb. |
||
Power Plug Disconnected |
1/4 Turn Counterclockwise |
Old Bulb Removed |
Rotate the base of
the old light bulb 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction before pulling
it straight out of the housing. The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) fog light bulb in this 2019 Compass Trailhawk 4X4 model was an Osram H11. |

Empty Bulb Housing |
Push On Power Plug |
Push the electrical connector on to the base of a new number H11 halogen light bulb. You should feel or hear the power plug "click" securely into place. Clean off the glass part of the new halogen bulb with a paper towel and some rubbing alcohol. Any oil or grease left on the new halogen bulb could cause a hot spot which may lead to the bulb burning out prematurely. If you'd like to have brighter fog lights, install some compatible replacement H11 LED units. |
||
1/4 Turn Clockwise - Lock |
New Fog Bulb Installed |
Test New Light Bulbs |
Rotate the new bulb
1/4 turn in the clockwise direction to secure it into place. Make sure the new bulb is securely in the socket and the electrical connector is locked in place. To test the new fog light bulbs, turn on the headlights and then activate the fog lights. |
||
Replace Wheel Well Liner |
Spin On 10mm Nut |
Tighten Nut Clockwise |
Push the wheel well
liner back into place. Spin on the 10mm nut a few turns by hand in the clockwise direction to make sure it doesn't become cross threaded. Tighten the nut with the 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet until it is snug. |
||
Tighten Four Screws |
Splash Shield Secured |
|
Replace the four
screws and tighten them in the clockwise direction with the 8mm socket and a
1/4" drive ratchet until they are snug. Double check that all five fasteners are secured. Don't forget to write down the bulb change in your vehicle's service records. Please
