This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and the updated 2022) Jeep Compass SUV equipped with the Tigershark MultiAir II 2.4 liter inline four cylinder engine in changing the motor oil and replacing the oil filter.

Owners of other Jeep, Dodge and RAM vehicles such as the Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Renegade, Gladiator, Cherokee, Grand Wagoneer, Wagoneer, Charger, Challenger, Durango, RAM 1500, Promaster, 2500 and 3500 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A few compatible replacement oil filters with their part numbers are as follows: K&N HP-1017, Fram XG10060, Wix 57060XP, Purolator PL12222, ACDelco PF48E, Bosch 3334 and Mobil 1 M1-113A.

The tools and other items needed to complete this oil change include the following: a 13mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet, a used oil catch container, a Lisle 63600 oil filter wrench (optional) and 5.5 U.S. quarts of SAE 0W-20 oil.

The first few steps are to warm up the engine to near operating temperature, drive the SUV on to a level surface, shift the gear selector into "Park" and turn off the ignition.

Warming up the engine will help suspend any contaminants within the old oil and also cause it to drain out faster.

Engage the emergency / parking brake and place wheel chocks on both sides of the rear tires to help prevent the vehicle from moving unexpectedly.

Then pop open the hood, twist off the oil fill cap in the counterclockwise direction and lift out the dipstick an inch or two.

Taking off the fill cap and partially removing the dipstick will help prevent a vacuum from forming and allow the old oil to drain out more quickly.

Slide under the engine bay and locate the openings in the under engine cover or "skid plate" for accessing the drain bolt and the oil filter.

The oil filter access opening is located closer to the front of the engine bay.

Position the used oil catch container to just below the oil drain bolt.

Tighten Clockwise
Carefully loosen the oil drain bolt by turning it in the counterclockwise direction with the 13mm socket and a 3/8" drive ratchet.

Be careful when you remove the oil drain bolt. The old oil might still be hot enough to burn your fingers depending on how long you warmed up the engine.

Allow the old oil to drain out for at least a few minutes or until the flow slows down to just an occasional drip.

If your drain plug is equipped with a washer (or "gasket") inspect it for any damage or wear and replace it if necessary.

Spin in the drain plug a few turns by hand in the clockwise direction to prevent it from becoming cross threaded.

Tighten the oil drain bolt with the 13mm socket and a 3/8" drive ratchet until it is snug.

If you have a torque wrench, the service manual has a torque specification of 20 lb-ft for tightening the oil drain plug.

Old Oil Filter Location
Carefully slide the used oil catch container to just below the old oil filter.

I highly recommend using an oil filter wrench such as the Lisle 63600. It makes removing even extremely tight and stubborn old oil filters extremely easy.

Attach the oil filter wrench to a short extension bar and the 3/8" drive ratchet.

Draining Out Old Oil
Loosen the old oil filter by turning it in the counterclockwise direction.

Once the old oil filter is loose, spin it off the rest of the way by hand.

Allow the old oil to drain out of the filter and the receptacle for at least a few minutes.

Be sure to recycle the old oil by dropping it off at an auto service station or an auto parts store.

Lubricate Rubber O-Ring

Spin On New Oil Filter
Dip your finger into some new oil and lubricate the rubber o-ring gasket on the new oil filter.

Lubricating the o-ring will help it form a better seal, prevent oil leaks and also make it easier to remove the filter during the next oil change.

Make sure the rubber o-ring gasket from the old oil filter is not still attached to the engine.

Spin on the new oil filter in the clockwise direction until the rubber o-ring makes contact with the engine.

Continue tightening the filter another 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn. Do NOT over tighten the filter.

If you over tighten the filter, the rubber o-ring might be damaged which could lead to an oil leak.

Replace Oil Fill Cap
Insert the automotive funnel into the oil fill opening.

The total oil capacity of the Tigershark MultiAir II 2.4L I4 engine for an oil change with a filter replacement is 5.5 U.S. quarts (or 5.2 Liters).

Jeep recommends using SAE 0W-20 oil.

Please double check your owner's manual for the correct oil capacity and viscosity recommendation for your climate and / or region of the world.

Since it is much better to have slightly less oil than necessary in an engine than to overfill it, I recommend only pouring in about 5 U.S. quarts of the 5.5 U.S. quarts total capacity.

Running an engine that has been overfilled with oil could lead to sluggish performance and damage to seals, gaskets or other components.

Temporarily replace the oil filler cap by twisting it on in the clockwise direction.

Check Oil Level

Oil Change Complete
Push the dipstick back down into place.

To properly check the oil level, make sure the vehicle is on a level surface. Start the engine and allow it to warm up to operating temperature. Turn off the ignition and allow the new oil to drain back down to the pan for at least 5 to 10 minutes.

The oil level should be in between the top and bottom of the cross hatched area. The bottom of the cross hatched area is the "minimum" line. The top of the cross hatched area is the "maximum" oil level line.

If necessary, slowly pour in more oil (up to the 5.5 U.S. quarts maximum amount) and repeatedly check the level on the dipstick until it reaches to or close to the top of the cross hatched area.

Replace the dipstick and make sure the oil fill cap is tight.

To reset the oil life meter and remove the "oil change due" indicator message from the instrument cluster display, follow these steps.

1. Do not press the brake pedal. 2. Push the engine "Start / Stop" button to place the ignition into the "ON / RUN" position but do not start the engine. 3. Fully press the accelerator (gas) pedal slowly three time within ten seconds. 4. Cycle the ignition to the "OFF/ LOCK" position. 5. The next time you start the engine the "oil change due" message should no longer be on the display and the oil life meter will have been reset.

Be sure to record the oil change in your vehicle's service records.

It would also be a good idea to check your parking spot, driveway or garage for drops of fresh oil during the next few days which might indicate a leak from the drain bolt or the new filter.

According to the "servicing and maintenance" section of the owner's manual, the "change oil" or "oil change required" message may appear as soon as 3,500 miles (5,600 km) or much more if you frequently drive on the highway. Do not exceed 10,000 miles (16,000 km) before completing an oil change.
