This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second
generation (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and revised 2022) Jeep Compass
SUV in checking or changing a blown fuse or a faulty relay in either the
engine bay, interior passenger compartment or cargo area electrical panels. Owners of other Jeep, Dodge and RAM vehicles such as the Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Renegade, Gladiator, Cherokee, Grand Wagoneer, Wagoneer, Charger, Challenger, Durango, RAM 1500, Promaster, 2500 and 3500 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. This 2019 Jeep Compass Trailhawk 4X4 model is equipped with standard mini blade electrical fuses. (Please check the old fuses in your vehicle before purchasing new ones. The later model years or other regions of the world might be equipped with low profile fuses or Micro2 fuses.) A yellow plastic fuse puller tool should be included on the top of the engine bay electrical box. If the tool is missing, you could use a pair of needle nose pliers with insulated handles. The first two steps are to open the hood and move to the right (driver) side of the engine bay. The black plastic electrical fuse and relay box is located just to the right of the 12V automotive battery and behind the windshield washer fluid filler tube. |

Yellow / Tan Screw |
1/4 Turn Counterclockwise |
Access Panel Unlocked |
Look down at the
base of the fuse panel access cover and locate the tan / light yellow
colored plastic screw. In the picture above the tan / yellow colored screw is situated close to a blue plastic piece. Use a flat head screwdriver to rotate the tan plastic screw 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction to unlock the access cover. The tan / yellow colored screw should pop up slightly to indicate that the cover is unlocked. |

Fuse Location Diagram |
Use your index and
middle fingers inserted into the raised tabs on the front of the access
cover to slide it up. Continuing sliding the access cover up until it can be fully detached from the electrical box. Turn over the cover to view the fuse and relay location diagram. There should also be a fuse location diagram in your owner's manual. |

Yellow Fuse Puller Tool |
Remove Fuse Puller Tool |
Engine Bay Fuse Block |
Pull the yellow
plastic fuse puller tool out of its slot on the top of the electrical box
(situated close to the red plastic + positive battery terminal cover). If you suspect that a faulty relay is the source of your electrical problem, the easiest way to troubleshoot the problem is to just simply replace the relay with a brand new one of the same amperage rating. If you have a digital multimeter tool, you could also test the old relay. To remove an old relay, grasp it with the needle nose pliers or standard pliers and carefully pull it straight out of its socket. |

Place Jaws Over Fuse |
Pull Out Old Fuse |
Pinch the end of
the fuse puller tool to open the jaws. Place the jaws over the old fuse that you'd like to check or change. Pull the old fuse straight out of the socket. |
||
Hold Up To Light Bulb |
Standard Mini Blade Fuse |
Push In New Fuse |
To check the condition of the old fuse, hold it up to a light source. If the thin metal strip or "band" in the translucent plastic middle of the old fuse appears to be burnt, broken or shriveled up, the old fuse is most likely "blown" and should be replaced. If the thin metal bar in the center of the fuse appears to be intact, the old fuse is probably still in good working condition. Since new fuses are so inexpensive, I recommend replacing the old fuse just in case it is blown even if the metal strip appears to be intact. Push a new fuse of the same amperage rating (e.g. 5A, 10A, 15A, 20 amps, etc.) straight into the socket. Double check that the new fuse is secure and fully seated in the socket. Replace the yellow plastic fuse puller tool to the top of the electrical box in the engine bay. If you'd like to add a hard wired 12V power source for any automotive accessories such as a Bluetooth audio adapter, radar & laser detector, an auxiliary gauge (turbo boost or transmission temperature), a dash camera / dashcam or a GPS navigation unit, you can install an "Add-A-Circuit" Fuse Holder Tap (also known as a piggyback fuse adapter). |

Push On Plastic Cover |
Replace Storage Container |
Push the small
plastic cover back into place over the cargo area fuse box. You should feel
or hear the two retaining clips "click" securely into place. Replace the storage bin on the left side of the cargo area. |
||
Cargo Area Driver Side |
Replace Fuse Puller Tool |
Slide In Access Cover |
Slide the engine bay electrical panel cover back down into place. | ||
Push Down Cover |
Turn Screw Clockwise |
Access Cover Secured |
Push and hold the
access cover down with one hand. Then use your other hand to turn the tan / yellow plastic screw in the clockwise direction to lock the access cover in place. Make sure the engine bay electrical box cover is securely in place. Test the electrical component that you were having problems with such as the horn, A/C system, stereo system, power windows, power door locks, tail lights, headlights, interior lights, power driver's seat, power tailgate, etc. If you are still having the same electrical issue, there might be a shorted out wire or the component itself needs to be replaced. Be sure to write down the fuse change in your vehicle's service records. Please
