This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second
generation 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 Mazda CX-9 SUV in removing
and cleaning or changing a faulty manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor
for the Skyactiv-G turbocharged 2.5 liter inline four cylinder engine. (The
MAP sensor is also known as the "barometric pressure sensor" by some
manufacturers.) Owners of other Mazda vehicles such as the CX-5, CX-3, CX-30, MX-30, CX-8, Mazda8 (MPV), MX-5 Miata, Mazda2 (Demio), Mazda3 (Axela), Mazda6 (Atenza) and Mazda5 (Premacy) may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) manifold absolute pressure sensor part number is Mazda PY8W-18-211 (also known as PY8W18211). One compatible replacement aftermarket MAP sensor with its part number is the Walker 225-1335. Just a few of the possible symptoms of a dirty, failing or faulty MAP sensor that needs to be replaced include rough idling, hesitating or jerking during acceleration, stalling, knocking, pinging, failing your state's emissions test and lower fuel economy (reduced MPG) due to excessive fuel consumption. If you have an OBDII scanner (also known as an OBD2 port scan tool), you may see the following MAP sensor related error codes: P0108 - MAP sensor high input, P0107 MAP sensor low voltage input and/or P0106 - MAP sensor range / performance problem. The only tool needed to remove and replace the MAP sensor is a Torx T25 star bit screwdriver or a Torx T25 socket with a ratchet. The first two steps are to open the hood and gently pull off the plastic engine cover. Set the engine cover aside in a safe place. |

Skyactiv-G Turbocharged |
MAP Sensor Location |
Close Up of MAP Sensor |
The MAP sensor is
located on the front right (driver) side of the Skyactiv-G turbocharged 2.5L
I4 engine. Take a look at Picture # 5 to see the exact location of the sensor highlighted with a red arrow. Clean off any debris on or around the old sensor. |
||
Push In Release Tab |
Disconnect Power Plug |
Electrical Connector Off |
Push in the release
button on the electrical connector before sliding it straight off the old
sensor. Locate the single black metal screw that secures the sensor to the intake manifold. |
||
Torx Star Bit Socket |
Loosen Counterclockwise |
Single Screw Removed |
Loosen the single
screw by turning it in the counterclockwise direction with the Torx T25 star
bit socket and a ratchet or a T25 screwdriver. Spin out the screw the last few turns with your fingers to help prevent it from falling down and becoming lost in the engine bay. Set the screw aside in a safe place. |
||
Rotate Back & Forth |
Pull Out Old Sensor |
OEM Part Number |
Gently rotate the
old sensor back and forth a few times to make sure the rubber gasket is not
stuck or "frozen" to the intake manifold.
Try to avoid just yanking out the old sensor. If the old rubber o-ring gasket rips or tears, part of it could end up falling inside the engine. The OEM sensor in this 2019 Mazda CX-9 AWD model was marked as part number Mazda PY8W-18-211 (also known as PY8W18211). All of the information written on the original MAP sensor was as follows: PY8W Bosch K3239 0 261 230 468 181025T0105221 676 Made In Japan. If you'd like to try cleaning your old sensor before buying a new one, use some CRC Electronic Cleaner spray. Allow the sensor to air dry before re-installing it. Do not use compressed air or vigorously shake the sensor to avoid damaging it. |
||
Empty Sensor Port |
Install Into Engine |
Line Up Screw Holes |
Carefully install
the new sensor into the port (opening) in the intake manifold. If you have trouble inserting the new sensor, apply a very small amount of new motor oil to the rubber o-ring gasket. Rotate the new sensor until the screw hole in the sensor matches the corresponding hole in the intake manifold. |
||
Spin In Torx Screw |
Tighten Screw Clockwise |
Push On Power Plug |
Spin in the screw a
few turns by hand in the clockwise direction to prevent it from becoming
cross threaded. Push the electrical connector straight on to the new sensor. You should feel or hear the power plug "click" securely into place. |
||
New Sensor Installed |
Push On Plastic Cover |
Start Engine - Test Sensor |
Line up the plastic
cover over the top of the engine. Push the cover back into place to secure the rubber friction fasteners. Double check that the engine cover is securely in place. If necessary, use an OBDII scanner (also known as an OBD2 scan tool) to clear the error codes, or you can try disconnecting the 12V automotive battery for at least 15 minutes. To test the new sensor, take the SUV for a short test drive to see if any of the previous symptoms re-appear. Don't forget to write down the sensor change in your vehicle's service records. For more,
