This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 Mazda CX-9 SUV in changing a weak or dead battery inside the "intelligent" or "smart" key fob remote control for the "Advanced Keyless Entry & Push Button Start System".

Owners of other Mazda vehicles such as the CX-5, CX-3, CX-30, MX-30, CX-8, Mazda8 (MPV), MX-5 Miata, Mazda2 (Demio), Mazda3 (Axela), Mazda6 (Atenza) and Mazda5 (Premacy) may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The compatible replacement coin cell (also known as a "watch" or "button") battery part number is CR2025.

The tools needed to complete this procedure include a flat head screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool and possibly also a small flat head screwdriver such as from a precision screwdriver set.

The first step is to turn over the fob and locate the small black plastic release switch.

Slide the release switch towards the outer edge of the fob and pull out the backup / emergency metal ignition key.

Flat Head Screwdriver
Set the metal ignition key aside in a safe place.

Please proceed with caution and at your own risk.

Insert the blade of the flat head screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool into the slot where the ignition key used to reside.

Very gently and carefully twist the screwdriver to pry apart the rear cover and the front part of the fob.

Do NOT use excessive force! The back cover of the fob should pop off relatively easily.

You may need to remove the screwdriver and re-insert it into the sides of the fob in between the back cover and the remote control unit housing.

Old Battery Removed
Set the battery cover aside in a safe place.

To remove the old battery from the socket, you can either carefully pry it out with a small flat head screwdriver or turn over the fob and tap it on the table to dislodge the battery.

Try to avoid damaging the plastic retaining piece, bending the metal electrical contacts or scratching the green circuit board with the screwdriver.

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) coin cell battery part number in the smart fob for this 2019 Mazda CX-9 AWD was a Panasonic CR2025 3 volt lithium.

Test New Fob Battery
Slide the ignition key back into the slot.

You should feel or hear the ignition key "click" securely into place.

To test the new battery, stand near your SUV and press the "Unlock" or "Lock" buttons.

If the new battery is working properly, you should see the parking lights flash and also hear the door locks opening and closing.

(You shouldn't have to reprogram the key fob. Just changing the battery will not clear the original programming from the factory.)

Be sure to write down the battery change in your vehicle's service records.
