This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the sixth generation (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021) GM Chevrolet Camaro in changing weak, failing or faulty gas charged trunk lid support struts (also known as "shocks", "prop rods" or "lifts").

The development and release of the 7th generation Camaro has been delayed, so the current sixth generation will probably continue into the 2022 and 2023 model years.

Owners of other General Motors vehicles from Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac such as the Malibu, Impala, Bolt, Corvette, Trailblazer, Trax, Equinox, Blazer, Traverse, Tahoe, Suburban, Colorado, Silverado, Express, Encore, Envision, Enclave, Regal, Sierra, Terrain, Acadia, Yukon, Canyon, Savana, XT4, XT5, XT6, Escalade, CT4, CT5, CTS and CT6 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) part number on the trunk lid support struts in this 2020 Camaro is 730878 0125N 316/19 B 27 23151210.

A few compatible replacement aftermarket trunk struts with their part numbers are as follows: Lift Supports Depot PM3388 (with spoiler), Lift Supports Depot PM3387 (with out spoiler), Tuff Support 613984 (RS package) and Tuff Support 613178 (convertible only).

Please double check the correct part number for your Camaro by using the Amazon Part Finder website.

The correct support struts may vary depending on the model year, trim level, whether or not the car has a spoiler and also depending on if the vehicle is a hardtop coupe or a convertible.

The only tool needed to remove and replace the trunk lid support struts is a small flat head screwdriver.

The first two steps are to pop open the trunk lid either with the button on the driver's door panel or the button on the key fob.

Then fully open the trunk lid until it is pointing straight up.

Even with one strut removed, the trunk should still stay open by itself since it extends all the way up until it is perpendicular (at a 90 degree angle) with the top of the vehicle.

For safety, I still recommend having an assistant hold open the trunk while you change one strut at a time.

Locate the metal "C" shaped retaining clips at the top and bottom of the old strut.

Release Top "C" Clip
Carefully insert the blade of the small flat head screwdriver into the notch in the middle of the "C" shaped retaining clip on the bottom end of the strut.

Gently pry out the "C" shaped retaining clip.

You do not need to fully remove the clip.

Pull the socket off the ball mount attached to the trunk.

Lubricate Ball Mounts
Then repeat the process to detach the top of the support strut.

(The genuine GM OEM part number on the struts in this 2020 Camaro were 730878 0125N 316/19 B 27 23151210.)

To keep the trunk lid operating smoothly and quietly, apply a small amount of grease or oil to the ball mounts.

Line up the new strut with the gas charged body at the top and the metal rod at the bottom.

Gently pry out the "C" shaped retaining clips until they are clear of the socket, but do not fully remove them.

New Strut Installed
Use the screwdriver to carefully push in the "C" clips until they "click" securely into place.

Double check that the new strut is securely installed.

To test the new struts, carefully open and close the trunk lid several times.

The trunk lid should fully open by itself and firmly remain in the raised position.

Be sure to record the strut change in your car's service records.
