This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the sixth
generation (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021) GM Chevrolet Camaro in
cleaning or changing the MAF (mass air flow) sensor for the LTG Ecotec 2.0
liter turbocharged inline four cylinder engine. (The steps should be the
same or similar for the LGX 3.6L V6, LT1 6.2L V8 and 6.2L LT4 supercharged
V8 engines.) The development and release of the 7th generation Camaro has been delayed, so the current sixth generation will probably continue into the 2022 and 2023 model years. Owners of other General Motors vehicles from Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac such as the Malibu, Impala, Bolt, Corvette, Trailblazer, Trax, Equinox, Blazer, Traverse, Tahoe, Suburban, Colorado, Silverado, Express, Encore, Envision, Enclave, Regal, Sierra, Terrain, Acadia, Yukon, Canyon, Savana, XT4, XT5, XT6, Escalade, CT4, CT5, CTS and CT6 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. Some of the symptoms of a dirty, failing or faulty MAF sensor include hard starting, rough idling, hesitation, surging, poor acceleration, hiccupping, reduced fuel economy (lowered MPG), stalling, loss of power and possibly misfiring. You might also see a CEL / SES (check engine light / service engine soon warning) on the gauge cluster. If you have an OBDII scanner it may reveal a MAF sensor related DTC (diagnostic trouble code) such as P0100, P0101, P0102, P0103 or P0104. The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) mass air flow sensor part number is ACDelco 23262344 (also marked with the part number AFH70M-122). Please be sure to double check the OEM part number on the MAF sensor in your vehicle before purchasing a new one. The only tool needed to remove and replace the sensor is a Torx T20 star bit screwdriver or a Torx T20 socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet. The first two steps are to open the hood and move to the right (driver) side of the engine bay. The MAF sensor is attached to the black plastic tube on the left side of the engine air filter housing next to the rubber air intake hose. |

Electrical Connector |
Slide Out Red Lock Tab |
Push In Release Tab |
Slide the red
plastic lock tab up and away from the MAF sensor to unlock the electrical
connector.
Push in the black plastic release tab on the the electrical connector before pulling the power plug straight off the old sensor. |
||
Disconnect Power Plug |
Loosen Counterclockwise |
Loosen Second Screw |
Loosen the two small black metal screws by turning them in the counterclockwise direction with a Torx T-20 star bit screwdriver. | ||
Spin Out Torx Screws |
Remove Second Screw |
Set Aside Two Screws |
Spin out the screws
the last few turns with your fingers to prevent from having them fall down
into the engine bay and possibly become lost. Set the two Torx T20 screws aside in a safe place. |
||
Slide Out Old Sensor |
OEM Mass Air Flow |
Inspect Old Sensor |
Carefully pull the
old sensor straight out of the black plastic air intake tube. Inspect all sides of the old sensor for any debris, soot or damage. If you would like to try cleaning the old sensor before purchasing a new sensor, use some cleaning spray specifically made for MAF sensors such as CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner.Gently spray the sensor wire with the cleaning spray and allow it to air dry. Do not use compressed air or shake the sensor to help avoid damaging the delicate sensor wire. |

Slide In New Sensor |
Orientate the new
sensor with the silver metal side facing up towards you and the black
plastic side facing down towards the engine air filter housing. Slide the new sensor straight into the slot. |
||
New Sensor In Place |
Tighten Screws Clockwise |
Two Screws Secured |
Spin in the two
screws a turn or two with your fingers to help prevent them from falling
down into the engine bay and becoming lost. Replace the two screws by turning them in the clockwise direction with the Torx T20 screwdriver until they are snug. Try to avoid over tightening the two screws to prevent from cracking the plastic MAF sensor housing. |
||
Push On Power Plug |
Slide In Red Lock Tab |
MAF Sensor Installed |
Slide the
electrical connector straight down on to the MAF sensor. You should feel or hear the power plug "click" securely into place. Slide the red plastic lock tab in towards the sensor to secure the connector in place. If you have an OBD2 scan tool, use it to clear any MAF sensor related diagnostic trouble codes. Start the engine and take the car for a short test drive to see if it is running properly. Be sure to write down the sensor cleaning or replacement in your vehicle's service records. Please
