This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the sixth
generation (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021) GM Chevrolet Camaro in
cleaning or changing the A/C system's cabin air filter element located in
the HVAC blower motor housing. The development and release of the 7th generation Camaro has been delayed, so the current sixth generation will continue into the 2022 and 2023 model years. Owners of other General Motors vehicles from Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac such as the Malibu, Impala, Bolt, Corvette, Trailblazer, Trax, Equinox, Blazer, Traverse, Tahoe, Suburban, Colorado, Silverado, Express, Encore, Envision, Enclave, Regal, Sierra, Terrain, Acadia, Yukon, Canyon, Savana, XT4, XT5, XT6, Escalade, CT4, CT5, CTS and CT6 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. A few compatible replacement filters with their part numbers are as follows: Spearhead BE-966, Fram CF11966, EcoGard XC10022C, EPAuto CP966, ACDelco CF185 and TYC 800181P. The tools needed to complete this procedure include a 7mm socket, an extension bar, a 1/4" drive ratchet, a flat head screwdriver and / or a pop rivet removal tool. To access the HVAC blower motor housing and the filter slot, you'll need to fully remove the glove box. There are two black metal screws just below the bottom edge of the glove box on either side of the front passenger knee airbag housing. |

Then loosen the

Slide Out Old Filter |
Old Air Filter Removed |
Inspect Both Sides |
Slide the old
filter straight out of the slot. Inspect both sides of the old air filter. If the old filter is dark grey or black and clogged with pollen, dirt, dust, soot, sand, leaves, insects, hair and other debris, it should be replaced with a new element. I recommend buying the Spearhead BE-966 cabin air filter since it has excellent reviews from other Chevy owners. If the old filter is relatively clean, just tap out the large debris and remove any fine dust with a wet/dry shop vacuum. |
||
Empty Filter Slot |
"Air Flow" Arrow Down |
Install New Filter |
Inspect the filter
slot in the HVAC blower motor housing for any large debris such as leaves,
twigs or dragonflies.
Use the crevice attachment on your vacuum cleaner to remove any large debris from the slot. Orientate the new filter with the "Air Flow" arrow pointing down towards the floor mat. Slide the new filter straight into the slot until it is flush with the opening. |
||

Push On Filter Cover |
Access Cover Secured |
Orientate the
filter cover with the "Down" arrow pointing down towards the floor. Gently push the filter cover back into place. You should feel or hear the four retaining clips "click" securely into place. Double check that the cover is secure before moving on to the next steps. |
||
Line Up Glove Box Hinges |
Slide In Retaining Pin |
From Outside --> In |
Raise the glove box
and line up the two halves of the plastic hinges together. Slide the metal retaining pins in from the outside towards the center of the glove box. |

Fully Seat Right Pin |
Left Pin Secured |
Make sure the two
metal pins are fully seated in the hinges. Raise the glove box up towards the dashboard. |
||
Pull Out Damper String |
Slide Mount Into Slot |
Move Button - Small Hole |
Pull the black
plastic mounting piece for the damper string out from behind the glove box. Slide the plastic mount up into the slot and insert the small button into the larger hole. Move the button forward and up from the larger hole into the smaller hole. The button should "pop" back securely into place. |
||

Push In Plastic Panel |
Push in the two
side walls of the glove box and re-insert the plastic side stoppers into
position behind the dashboard. Close the glove box. Move the plastic panel below the glove box (on either side of the knee airbag) back into the correct position around the hinges. |
||
Tighten Right Screw |
Right Screw Secured |
Replace Left Side Screw |
Replace the screw on the right side by turning it in the clockwise direction with the 7mm socket, an extension bar and a 1/4" drive ratchet until it is snug. | ||
Tighten Left Screw |
Left Screw Secured |
Glove Box Replaced |
Replace the 7mm
screw on the left side.
Try to avoid over tightening the screws to prevent from breaking the plastic panel. Enjoy the fresh clean air from your A/C system! Be sure to write down the filter change in your vehicle's service records. According to the service interval specification in the owner's manual, the passenger compartment air filter should be replaced every 22,500 miles (or every 36,000 km). Please
