This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the 4th generation (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 model years) Kia Optima sedan in changing a burnt out map light bulb located in the overhead console or upgrade both bulbs to brighter LED units.

Owners of other Kia, Hyundai or Genesis vehicles such as the Niro, Sportage, Sedona, Telluride, Sorento, Rio, Forte, Soul, K900, Cadenza, K5, Stinger, Tucson, Santa Fe, Kona, Palisade, Elantra, Sonata, Accent, Veloster, Ioniq, Nexo, Venue, G70, G80 and G90 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The compatible replacement festoon style light bulb is part number DE3175 which is available from various manufacturers such as Sylvania, Philips and Bosch.

If you would like to have brighter map lights, install some DE3175 LED bulbs.

The earlier model years of the fourth generation may be equipped with miniature wedge base light bulbs which can be replaced with any miniature wedge base bulb such as the 194 or W5W.

The only tool needed to access and replace the light bulbs is a small flat head screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool.

To prevent from scratching the plastic surfaces, either cover the tip of your screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth or instead use a small plastic trim panel removal tool.

Insert the blade of the screwdriver in between the front area of the lens cover (closer to the windshield) and the overhead console.

Gently pry out the lens cover to release the two "C" shaped retaining clips from their mounting pegs.

Avoid prying at the rear of the lens cover (closer to the back of the car) to prevent from breaking the plastic tabs.

Pull Out Old Light Bulb
Set the lens cover aside in a safe place.

If the old light bulb was recently turned on, be careful when you remove it. The old bulb might still be hot enough to burn your fingers.

Pull the old festoon style light bulb straight out of the socket.

If you have trouble removing the bulb with your fingers, carefully and gently use the screwdriver or pry bar tool to pull out one of the metal end caps.

Do not apply pressure to the glass center of the bulb to prevent from having it break and send shards of glass flying into your face or eyes.

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) festoon style light bulb in this 2019 Optima LX FE was marked as part number KHA12V10W 18105A.

Some Kia models are equipped with a large miniature wedge base light bulb rated at 10 watts which can be replaced with any other miniature wedge base light bulb such as the 168, 194, 2825 and W5W.

To replace that large 10 watt miniature wedge base incandescent light bulb, I recommend choosing a brighter LED bulb such as the 194 LED.

Push a new number DE3175 festoon style light bulb straight into the socket.

Make sure the bulb is fully seated in between the electrical contacts.

Line up the translucent plastic lens cover with the opening in the overhead console.

First, re-insert the tab on the rear edge (closer to the back of the car) of the lens cover into the light housing.

Then swing up the front edge of the lens cover (near the windshield).

Gently snap in the two "C" shaped retaining clips over their plastic mounting bars.

Move Switch To "Door"
To test the new map light bulb, press on the lens cover to activate the "On / Off" switch.

Tip - If you installed an LED bulb and it doesn't work, try removing the bulb from the socket, rotate it 180 degrees and push it back into the socket. Some LED bulbs are "polarized" and will only work when installed with the "+" positive and "-" negative electrical contacts in the correct orientation.

Then move the "On / Door / Off" rocker switch to the "Door" position so that the map lights will illuminate any time a passenger door or the driver door is opened.

Be sure to write down the bulb change in your vehicle's service records.
